Today's monument valuation
Aachen’s city center boasts the largest known number of relocated facades from the postwar period in Germany. Between 1950 and 1980, relocating facades was a common urban design practice during reconstruction and urban renewal. Today, this approach is referred to as the Aachen Model. Since then, there has been no further incorporation of existing building fabric into new constructions, which is why this can be considered a closed chapter. It demonstrates an identification with the region’s architectural tradition and a commitment to preserving this heritage even in times of rapid growth and sweeping changes to city centers.
