Kockerellstrasse 13
Monument #7
Introduction
As a counterpart to the corner building no. 9 opposite, a new building was erected here in the area of the historic buildings at Kockerellstrasse 19 and 21, in which the historicizing façade and the modern side and rear façade are also clearly distinguishable.
Moving history
This new building was erected in 1974 in place of two buildings, probably from the 18th century. While the façade of the historic house no. 19 was not reused, the baroque jambs of house no. 21 were integrated into the new building. Much more emphasis was placed on the design of the side façade in modern forms with a central risalit, store floor and loggias, which was then continued on the rear side facing Augustinerplatz.

The modern façade comprises the corner to Kockerellstrasse as an unstructured, massive structure. The historic façade is consistently separated by a joint and thus presented as a separate component. The only connecting element is the blue stone cornice above the first floor, which is continued as a concrete band in the new building. The first floor of the historic building no. 21 had been heavily altered by the addition of a store, so only the walls of the upper floors could be reused. Some of them show a wedge stone with a small flower in the foliage. The window surrounds on the top floor may have been reworked. The origin of the added stones on the first floor is unknown.
© Olaf RohlBaroque elements such as the wedge stones with flowers and foliage adorn the façade of the house. Their exact origin is unknown.
Special features
Thanks to the new Augustinerplatz created in the 1970s, the rear sides of the houses at Kockerellstrasse 13-19 could now also be designed in a much more contemporary sense and open up towards the square.

Translocation
The method of translocation was already known and popular in 19th century urban planning. It allowed old building stock to be saved and reused. In Aachen, this method was applied in a special and extensive way.
