City center mobility concept
Background
Based on a council motion from 2020, the administration drew up a concept for traffic calming in the city center. This was presented and adopted in 2023. Part of the concept is to improve the quality of stay and conditions for pedestrians, implement the priority cycle route network in the city center, improve and expand public transport in the city center in advance of the Regiotram while maintaining the accessibility of the city center for car traffic and commercial traffic.
Based on the "Inner City Tomorrow" activation project, the mobility concept for the inner city was named "Inner City Mobility for Tomorrow".
Goals
These targets were set for inner-city mobility in 2023:
Easily accessible city center
Everyone can easily reach the cultural, gastronomic, educational and shopping facilities in the heart of Aachen. The city center is well served by all modes of transport.
Fair and safe transportation
The interaction is considerate and relaxed, there are no serious accidents.
Good neighborhoods
The neighborhoods are quiet, children can play and people can enjoy each other's company.
Core project city center development areas for car traffic
The colored orientation system of Aachen's parking guidance system forms the basis for the development concept for car traffic. According to this concept, car traffic should be routed directly from the Alleenring to the five areas in order to reduce traffic in the city center to a minimum. In order to achieve this, the concept of steering points was adopted in 2023, with which traffic is to be diverted back from an area to the avenue ring at the three marked points - in addition to existing restrictions for car traffic.

Core project priority cycle routes and cycle distribution ring
In 2019, it was decided that there should be a safe and convenient route into the city center from every outer district. To ensure that the desired increase in cycling does not come at the expense of pedestrian traffic in the old town, it was decided as part of the priority cycle network that the Grabenring should be redesigned as a cycle distribution ring connecting all priority cycle routes.

Core project premium footpaths
In 2012, the concept of premium footpaths was adopted as part of the city center concept. The aim is to connect the old town with the green areas around the city on comfortable paths.

Core project Regiotram
The possibility of extending the Euregiobahn network to include a connection between Baesweiler and Aachen city center has been under consideration for several years. The political committees in Baesweiler, Alsdorf, Würselen and Aachen are currently planning the concrete implementation in the envisaged road areas.
