On June 2, Verlautenheide was added to the e-scooter service area in conjunction with a "virtual" parking zone at the Verlautenheide Endstraße stop, right next to the pedelec rental station. This means that rental processes of the scooter providers implementing the extension can only be completed in the areas marked in the apps. Over the course of the summer, the "Mobilstation Verlautenheide Endstraße" will also have a car sharing station.

On September 23, 2026, the “HaarenMobil” information bike was in the newly redesigned park at the old cemetery from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In response to numerous requests from the district, staff from the administration and police, together with District Mayor Daniel Hecker and Ms. Uerdingen from the Senior Citizens’ Council, asked cyclists and dog owners to be considerate. The vast majority were very understanding. The posters reading “Little Space. Lots of Consideration.” will remain on display there for some time. The rules are simple: Benno-Levy-Weg and all paths in the park are marked as sidewalks but are open to bicycle traffic. By observing the basic rules of good coexistence, everyone can get around here “fairly together.” The “achtsam-unterwegs” campaign is part of the City of Aachen’s road safety efforts. www.aachen.de/achtsam-unterwegs 

Through the City of Aachen’s issue-reporting system, residents can submit reports or direct questions about specific locations to city officials at any time. Current issues related to mobility in Haaren are discussed by the Aachen-Haaren District Council. You can find the meeting dates further down on this page. A Mobility Roundtable was established to facilitate dialogue between the city administration, politicians, and key institutions in Haaren.

The results of the mobility survey conducted this spring in Haaren will be presented to the Haaren District Council and published in the second half of 2026.

Background

In addition to the integrated urban development concept for Haaren and the "Haaren priority cycle route" project, the "Haaren cleverly mobile" project outline was successfully submitted to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in December 2021. For funding reasons, the overall concept had to be broken down into individual modules, which led to different start and end times for the sub-projects.

With the reopening of the Haarbachtal bridge in September 2025, after just 20 months of construction, traffic in Haaren has returned to normal. Parts of the resident protection concept in the area around the Am Haarbach elementary school have been consolidated. To make mobility in Haaren even more compatible with the city, numerous dialog formats will take place in Haaren in 2026 under the title "HaarenMobil".

(New) mobility services in Haaren

• In the fall of 2023, the SB71 express bus route from Verlautenheide via Haaren-Markt to the University Hospital was launched with funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Netliner was launched as a combination of a scheduled local bus service and an on-demand bus system. In May 2025, the service was optimized. Both the express bus and the local bus are scheduled to continue operating in 2027, even after the funding ends. The “Netliner Haaren” on-demand bus service had to be discontinued in September 2025 due to low demand and the resulting high operational costs. Following the discontinuation, the taxi stand will be moved back to the side lane.
• The largest cycling project is the “Haaren Priority Bicycle Route” from Verlautenheide to Grabenring in the city center. The funding agency has not yet completed its review of the grant application, which was submitted in January 2025.
• In recent years, the accident site on Alt-Haarener-Straße, among other locations, has been eliminated by the addition of a bike lane.
• In 2023, a total of 96 bike racks were installed at 32 locations in Haaren and Verlautenheide in coordination with the Haaren District Council. Following a suggestion from the Haaren Mobility Forum in January 2026, several bike racks that were either unused or obstructing pedestrian traffic were removed in coordination with the district council and the district office.
• For pedestrians, there are plans to create an accessible loop trail in downtown Haaren that can be used very comfortably and safely, even with a walker or stroller. Building on the signage for hiking trails, the signage for walking routes leading from the center of Haaren—for example, to the Haarberg—will be extended. These measures are planned for 2027 and 2028.
• For many years, there has been a car-sharing station with two cambio vehicles at the Haaren District Office. In October 2025, cambio opened another station on Haarener Gracht. Another car-sharing station in Verlautenheide is set to open soon.
• The Aachen-Haaren district office is also home to one of several bike service stations in Aachen where you can carry out minor repairs yourself. One of Aachen's many cargo bikes is also available there for free use around the clock. Information on the offer and registration can be found at Aachen.de/lara.
• In April 2026, the new "euregiobike" e-bike rental system was launched, and the old locations are gradually being brought back into service.
  
• ASEAG's movA app is to be further developed in line with demand; among other things, the possibility of "rewarding" environmentally friendly use of transport, which was implemented in the Aachen.move app, is to be integrated here.
• In September 2025, a dialog and participation project was launched with various components for the evaluation and further development of mobility services in Haaren. Among other things, a household survey on mobility, city walks, workshops on mobility offers and information stands are being implemented in close coordination with the district council and the district office.
• The "Haaren Mobility Forum" took place in January 2026. The main findings of the forum have been documented in a report.
  
  

To establish a common framework for these mobility services and to encourage their use, the initiatives will be promoted under the unified name "HaarenMobil" starting in the fall of 2025.

The district of Haaren

The district of Haaren is located in the north-east of the city of Aachen, around 3.5 km from the city center and borders on the towns of Würselen, Eschweiler and Stolberg. Haaren includes the districts of Haaren, Verlautenheide and Quinx as well as the Hüls industrial estate.

12,600 people live here. 17 percent of the population is under the age of 18 (compared to 14.7 percent in Aachen as a whole) and 19 percent are 65 or older (Aachen 17 percent). The average age of the residents is 41.7 years (Aachen 40.6 years).

The district has a district council and a district office with independent citizen services.

The Aachen freeway junction with the A4 to the north, the A44 to the east and the A544 to Europaplatz are highly visible landmarks and boundaries of the district. The construction of the new Haarbachtal bridge, which will be fully closed from January 2024 to September 2025, has led to major traffic congestion in the Haaren district.
