Tradition & Avantgarde, Art & Design. Every year several hundred craftsmen from all over Europe dismantle their workshops at home in order to re-open them for two days against the historical backdrop of Aachen's Altstadt (old town). At over three hundred stalls, crafts, art and design, both traditional and avantgarde, are produced and demonstrated. Each year up to a quarter of a million visitors are greeted by Aachen's Chamber of Handicrafts as organizer of the market.
All around the Cathedral and Town Hall, smiths, sculptors, basket makers, milliners, glassblowers, brush makers and potters show old handicraft techniques and new design trends in wood, ceramics, textiles, stone and metal. The European market is a centre of exchange for trends and ideas for fellow craftsmen as well as for the general public.
