  • Moving history

Building no. 21 on this site, which survived until the post-war period, can be dated to around 1840. After demolition, a new three-axis building was erected here in 1974 under the direction of city conservator Leo Hugot. The side facing Kockerellstrasse was given a translocated façade, while the rear facing Augustinerplatz was designed in a modern style with balconies.

  • Search for clues

According to Hugot's notes, the façade of the house originates from Pontstraße, or more precisely from the former Pontstraße 1 b. The three upper storeys were dismantled and inserted here in a slightly different form: a sturdy cornice on the second floor was inserted above the stone relief on the second floor. The projecting element better protected the relief from the weather. The stone band that was originally there was inserted under the windows of the new second floor instead. The first floor of the old building had already been altered, which is why it was also left open and designed with two load-bearing concrete supports.

The stone relief is protected from the weather by a sturdy cornice above it.

  • Special features

As with the neighboring buildings, the newly created Augustinerplatz enabled the design of two different façades, one with a historical character facing Kockerellstrasse and the other with a modern façade facing the square. The stores on the first floor were designed accordingly with two shop windows and two entrances.

Translocation

The method of translocation was already known and popular in 19th century urban planning. It allowed old building stock to be saved and reused. In Aachen, this method was applied in a special and extensive way.
