Introduction

The historic building on this site, Kockerellstraße 15, was one of the few war casualties in this district. The gap between the buildings was closed during the renovation measures of the 1970s by a new building, which today forms the corner to the then newly created Augustinerplatz and features two different façade designs.

  • Moving history

The current building with the house number 9 was built in 1975 by the architects Hans-Jürgen Metzelthin and Günter Teller. While the façade facing Kockerellstraße is a historical façade, the side façade facing Augustinerplatz has a modern design. Here, a few, irregularly distributed windows and a largely closed brick façade deliberately form a strong contrast to the strictly structured main façade, which is broken up with large windows.

  • Search for clues

The completely relocated façade of the building at Peterstrasse 47 facing Kockerellstrasse was rebuilt with only a few changes to the base. As this was actually a terraced house façade with other façades connected on both sides, an attractive solution had to be found for the new construction as a corner building. To this end, the profiled gable cornice was pulled a little way around the corner and the brick wall was widened slightly, giving the façade a slight asymmetry.

The modern design of the side of the building facing Augustinerplatz provides an exciting contrast to the historic façade.

  • Special features

The historic adjacent building at Peterstraße 49 was also demolished, and its distinctive façade was incorporated into the new Hof 20 building.

Translocation

The method of translocation was already known and popular in 19th century urban planning. It allowed old building stock to be saved and reused. In Aachen, this method was applied in a special and extensive way.
