Run-off election on September 28, 2025
Polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 28 for the run-off election for Lord Mayor and City Councillor. A new polling card is not required for the run-off election at the polling station. You can vote at your polling station with your existing polling card or by presenting an identity card.
Anyone who applied for postal voting for both (!) local elections will automatically receive their postal voting documents, so they do not need to apply for new ones.
On-site election from September 22
Citizens who are not in Aachen on election day can vote directly at the electoral office at Blücherplatz 43 or at their respective district offices from September 22 to 26. The electoral office will then be open with extended opening hours Monday to Friday from 8 am to 3 pm and on Wednesday from 8 am to 6 pm. The district offices can be reached during their regular opening hours.
Online absentee ballot application by September 24
Eligible voters in Aachen who have not applied for postal voting documents for both elections and would like to vote by post in the run-off election can apply for them online. The online postal voting portal can be found at aachen.de/briefwahlantrag. Applications can be submitted there until September 24, 11:59 pm.
Applications can also be submitted informally by letter or email to wahlen@mail.aachen.de until 3 p.m. on September 26, stating the first and last name, address, date of birth and any different shipping address. However, timely delivery by post cannot be guaranteed in this way. In this case, it is safer to vote on site.
Receipt of postal votes by September 28, 4 p.m. at the latest
The postal voting documents will be sent out at the end of the week after the election committee of the StädteRegion has met.
Postal voting documents must be returned in good time so that they reach the electoral office by 4 p.m. on election Sunday at the latest. If you want to be sure and have the opportunity, you can post the documents directly to the electoral office at Blücherplatz 43.
Appointments in the event of loss or illness
Anyone who can provide credible evidence that the postal voting documents have not been received can collect postal voting documents from the electoral office by Saturday, September 27, 12 noon at the latest. After this time, it is no longer possible to obtain a new polling card. A blocking note is entered in the electoral roll so that it is not possible to vote at the polling station on election Sunday.
Only in exceptional cases, for example if someone suddenly falls ill, can the application for a postal vote be submitted by 3 p.m. on election Sunday, September 28 at the latest. The election letter with the corresponding ballot papers for the run-off election must be received by the electoral office or the district office by 4 p.m. on Sunday at the latest.
More than 49,000 applications have already been submitted.
Applications for election assistance are still welcome
Anyone who would like to support the run-off election can apply to be an election assistant by sending an email to wahlhilfe@mail.aachen.de or using a form that can be found at aachen.de/wahlhilfe. The service is available to anyone aged 16 and over with a German ID card or European eID card in the City of Aachen's service portal. The prerequisite for using the online service is authentication using the bundID with name and password. Anyone who meets the requirements can become a poll worker for the run-off election. You can indicate whether you would prefer to work in a postal or polling station and what role you would like to play on the electoral board.
