Democracy you can touch: The "VIA DEMOCRATIA EUROPA" leads through Aachen

Aachen is now officially part of the 850-kilometre "VIA DEMOCRATIA EUROPA", a unique symbol of togetherness and the democratic values of Europe. On Tuesday, October 21, Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen, together with Gerhard Laux, Chairman of the Via Democratia Europa e.V. association, unveiled the official plaque of the "European Route of Democracy" at the Centre Charlemagne at Katschhof.

"The European Route, which stretches an impressive 850 kilometers from Strasbourg to Brussels, is much more than just a transport link. It is a cross-border symbol that unites people, cities and nations. This route stands for the spirit of Europe - for understanding, cooperation and overcoming borders," said Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen.

The European Route of Democracy connects the three central institutions of the EU, Strasbourg (legislative), Luxembourg (judicial) and Brussels (executive), and leads through breathtaking landscapes, cultural highlights and lively border regions. Aachen, as the border triangle between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, is thus given a stage to showcase its special role as a vibrant place of democracy.

The open, barely visible borders between the countries are a central theme of the route, which is particularly evident here in the Euregio. "The VIA DEMOCRATIA runs through an area surrounded by five countries without borders. It was important to us to include as many people as possible on this route. We are delighted that Aachen, as a special city in the border triangle, is part of the route," said Gerhard Laux.

"It is no coincidence that our region is referred to as the "laboratory of Europe". Because what works here has radiance - for the whole of Europe. And that is precisely why I am particularly pleased that we are able to unveil this plaque today. As a symbol of our democracy, as a sign of European cooperation, and as an invitation to all people to set out on the path towards more participation, more understanding, towards a Europe that remains open, solidary and democratic," said the Lord Mayor.

Cultural travel guide to European democracy
Via Democratia Europa e.V. has published a multilingual cultural travel guide: "VIA DEMOCRATIA EUROPA - Discover what connects". This travel guide is not only a practical companion for explorers, but also tells exciting stories about European democracy and its roots in the region. The association wants to make the VIA DEMOCRATIA EUROPA as well-known as the US-American original as the "European Route 66".
