Politicians have commissioned the specialist administration to gradually implement the "Inner-city mobility for tomorrow" concept in Aachen. The first building blocks will be implemented in August 2024. A control point will be set up at the Jakobstraße/Löhergraben and Karlsgraben intersection. Its task is to guide motorized private traffic into the city center in such a way that the Grabenring is relieved. Adjacent to this, an approximately 550-metre-long cycle lane will be set up on Karlsgraben and Templergraben as a first important section of the planned cycle distribution ring on Grabenring.
At the new and first Karlsgraben control point, the previous traffic routing for private motorized traffic will be changed. In particularly justified individual cases, a special permit to drive through the control point can be applied for from the road traffic authorities. Through traffic for motorized private transport will be completely shifted to the avenue ring. All destinations within the ring road will remain easily accessible.
For those who travel to and through Aachen by car, the changed traffic routing will mean a change of routine. For this reason, the administration provided information about the "City center mobility for tomorrow" concept and the changed traffic routing at the Karlsgraben control point in a digital event on Tuesday, July 23. Just over 60 interested people took part in the event.
An audio presentation of the event and the answers to the questions put to the administration during the event can be found at www.innenstadtmobilitaet-morgen.de.
All the important facts about the new traffic routing are also available on this page. The project and its objectives are explained. Answers to the most frequently asked questions are also provided.
"City center mobility for tomorrow"
The overall concept aims to ensure that the city center can be reached safely and conveniently by all means of transport. The specific objectives of the overall concept were formulated in the policy resolution of October 2023: The city center should be easily accessible. Interaction in road traffic should be considerate and relaxed. People should be able to live quietly in the city center and enjoy being together.
In addition to making car traffic compatible with the city, the aim is to strengthen walking, cycling and bus transport as an environmental network and improve the quality of life in the city center. Ultimately, the aim is to be more considerate of one another, network mobility options and make urban transport climate-neutral.
What exactly is planned at the Karlsgraben/Löhergraben/Jakobstraße junction?
Jakobstraße marks the boundary between the two development areas Karlsgraben and Alexianergraben. Traffic routing will be changed at the Karlsgraben/Löhergraben/Jakobstrasse junction. Specifically, motorized private traffic traveling on Karlsgraben will no longer be able to continue directly from there onto Löhergraben - and vice versa. However, it can still turn into Jakobstraße from both directions in the direction of Alleenring. In the direction of the city centre or Alleenring, private motorized traffic can continue along Jakobstraße, i.e. continue straight ahead across the intersection or turn into Löhergraben or Karlsgraben.
What is happening on Karlsgraben and Templergraben?
A cycle lane is being set up on Karlsgraben and marked in accordance with the Aachen standard for cycle lanes. Bicycles will soon have priority there, other types of traffic will be welcome. The road will be painted red, similar to Lothringerstraße, for example. A similar cycle lane will also be created on Templergraben. However, it will initially only have white markings. Regionetz still wants to renew its cable network here. The red markings will be applied after these Regionetz works. On Löhergraben, there will be a cycle lane with red markings in the area between Guaitastrasse and Jakobstrasse.
What else is planned?
At Löhergraben, a delivery and loading zone will be set up directly in front of the junction with Jakobstraße, as well as the first of a total of 16 politically approved parking spaces for e-scooters. There will be two further parking spaces for e-scooters on Karlsgraben and Templergraben. The majority of the other parking spaces are currently being tendered. In addition, Driescher Gässchen in the direction of Templergraben will also be marked in red as a cycle lane. This work will start at the beginning of August.
When will the work begin?
The work on Driescher Gässchen is expected to start on August 5, with all other sections following from mid-August with the marking and signage work.
How will the public be informed?
The administration will provide information about the changed traffic routing and the concept for inner city mobility directly on site. Information stands are planned at the new Karlsgraben control point on August 6, 8, 13, 20, 27 and 29 from 4.30 to 5.30 pm.
Since July 23, there have also been consultation hours on inner-city mobility on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. in the OecherLab, Kapuzinergraben 19, where the new mobility concept is explained in more detail, including a route planner that includes the new traffic routing in the city center.
