Current

From February 10 to March 10, 2026, a public engagement process took place regarding the planned redesign. On February 24, a public forum was held at the Eurogress. The presentation given there, as well as a report on the public engagement process, can be found in the “Download” section.

On September 9, 2026, the Aachen-Mitte District Council issued a recommendation in favor of Option 4. The Mobility Committee will discuss the proposal on October 8, 2026.

Occasion and goal

The section of the Rolandstraße/Krefelder Straße axis between the "Bastei" junction and Soerser Weg is part of the Aachen - Berensberg cycle priority route(RVR). Cycle traffic is to be routed particularly safely and comfortably here. Extensive work by Regionetz is also planned. Following these construction measures, the road space in the out-of-town direction could be redistributed.

Stock

The street space currently shows deficits in several places (see also the photo compilation in the "Download" section):

• No cycling facilities (cycle paths, cycle lanes, etc.)
• Cycle traffic: Turning left into Soerser Weg requires multiple lane changes on the hill with heavy vehicle traffic
• Traffic light-supported crossing of Krefelder Straße in the Pippinstraße/Elsa-Brändström-Straße axis is missing
• No footpath available along Krefelder Straße: Footpath documents need
• Left-sided clearance of the sidewalk for bicycle traffic (in the direction of Bastei) is conflict-prone
• Path connection between Pippinstraße and Krefelder Straße is barely usable for cyclists
• Bastei bus stop: Very short bus stop area
• Rolandstraße: Many vehicles do not park in accordance with the current markings

Planning

Four planning options were developed in succession. Options 1 and 2 were discussed at the political level in December 2025. Options 3 and 4 were developed following this initial political discussion. Key aspects, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each option, are briefly described below:

(variant 1)

A bike path and a sidewalk with comfortable and safe widths will be constructed. This requires extensive work in the median to separate the traffic lanes. At the intersection with Soerser Weg, there will be only one vehicle lane in the direction of Tivoli. However, an analysis has shown that vehicle traffic will still experience minor delays. Option 1 is not currently being pursued, as Option 4 follows a similar planning concept but has better prospects for implementation because it avoids any modification to the median strip. The cost for Option 1 is estimated at 1.52 million euros.

Variant 2

A bike lane will be constructed between the “Bastei” bus stop and the intersection with Soerser Weg; it will be protected from motor vehicle traffic by dividers. A new sidewalk will not be built. The cost of Option 2 is estimated at 610,000 euros.

Variant 3

Between the “Bastei” bus stop and the intersection with Soerser Weg, a dedicated bike path will be constructed, but no sidewalk. As with Option 1, extensive work will be carried out in the median to create more space. In this option, the space will be used to maintain two lanes of traffic heading toward Tivoli. This would further reduce the already short wait times compared to the other options. The cost for Option 3 is estimated at 1.52 million euros.

Variant 4

As in Option 1, both a pedestrian walkway and a bicycle path are constructed, though on a smaller scale. The sidewalk is narrower than the specified standard width. As a result, construction work in the median strip is not required, making this option less expensive than Option 1. The cost for Option 4 is estimated at 1.26 million euros.
