Current

RegioNetz is currently working on this stretch of road and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027. The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2025 but has been delayed due to extensive archaeological finds. Following this, the road will be restored by the road authority. To this end, a mirroring process will be carried out over the RegioNetz shortly, so that construction can begin in the second quarter of 2027.

Occasion and goal

On Stromgasse, between Mühlenberg and Hubertusstraße, Regionetz has been carrying out extensive renovation work (gas, water, sewer, and district heating lines) since April 2023. This work involves excavation of the roadway and ancillary facilities. The Regionetz project was originally estimated to take 12 months. However, due to archaeological finds (from the Paubach-Carolingian period), the work has been delayed and rescheduling has become necessary.

Planning

The principles of the current regulations are observed during planning. When weighing up the planning elements, the basic principle is that road safety for all road users must take precedence over convenience (VwV-StVO, General Administrative Regulation on Road Traffic Regulations, Section A, to § 39-43).

The restoration of the street space after completion of the Regionetz measures will be used to remedy the existing functional deficiencies of pedestrians. Stromgasse is a cross-connection between premium footpaths and is to be upgraded as such in terms of its function and use.

The traffic area will be constructed at grade, including tactile elements. The entire cross-section will be paved. The area will be designated as a traffic-calming zone. The 10 planned parking spaces, 2 of which are for electric vehicles, will be arranged in an alternating pattern. In addition, 3 tree locations and a flower bed, as well as 26 bicycle parking spaces, are planned.

The previous one-way traffic rule allowing bicycles to travel in the opposite direction is being repealed.

Next steps

The archaeologically significant discovery required Regionetz to revise its plans for the new sewer line. The city’s project will be implemented following the completion of Regionetz’s project. A corresponding implementation resolution was already obtained in December 2024.

Costs

The construction period is around 6 months. The costs are expected to be around €1.0 million.
