Püngelerstraße

Brief info
- Project: Complete new construction
- Objective: Structural and functional improvements
- Schedule: 2026/27
- Project phase: Implementation planning
Current
On February 4, 2026, the Aachen-Laurensberg District Council approved the planning resolution for the southern section of Püngelerstraße in accordance with Variant 2. The project was subsequently transferred to the Civil Engineering Department in March 2026 for further planning and is currently in the preliminary design phase.

Occasion and goal
Regionetz GmbH has renewed and laid supply lines and sewers in the southern part of Püngelerstraße. In connection with this work, the road is to be completely rebuilt and transformed into a traffic-calmed area.
Today's situation
As the southern section of Püngelerstraße in the Laurensberg district is a cul-de-sac, the road is used exclusively for access traffic. This means that traffic volumes are low. The road is located in a 30 km/h zone and is designed according to the separation principle. The carriageway is only 4.60 meters wide, which makes it almost impossible for vehicles to meet. In addition, undesignated parking is tolerated on the roadside, which further impedes traffic. The width of the sidewalks varies between 1.50 and 1.70 meters, which does not comply with the prescribed minimum dimensions according to RASt 06 and therefore cannot guarantee safe and barrier-free pedestrian traffic. Furthermore, there are no tactile guidance elements.
Planning
The principles of the current regulations are observed during planning. When weighing up the planning elements, the basic principle is that road safety for all road users must take precedence over convenience (VwV-StVO, General Administrative Regulation on Road Traffic Regulations, Section A, to § 39-43).
The Regionetz pipeline work will make it possible to redistribute the cross-section of the road, improve its condition and, in particular, make it more comfortable for pedestrians. The administration's plans essentially provide for pedestrian safety and accessibility measures as well as traffic calming measures. There is one possible cross-section variant for the conversion.

(Preferred variant in the direction of Alte Vaalser Straße)
The plans envisage the conversion of Püngelerstraße into a traffic-calmed area. Vehicles will only be allowed to drive at walking speed.
The street is being redesigned into a level where all road users share the road space. For this purpose, there is a complete "sidewalk" on the western side with a width of 1.50 m to ensure accessibility with the help of a tactile guidance system. In the remaining width, parking spaces and green areas alternate with roadways. There are sections with a width of 8 m, which can be used equally by all road users. In narrow places, the pavement is the aforementioned 1.50 m next to a "roadway" with a width of 4 m and parking spaces or green areas with a width of 2.50 m. The parking spaces are located alternately on the western side next to the pavement and on the eastern side at the edge of the property boundaries. Between the narrow areas are the wide sections that allow traffic to pass.
There are approx. 13 parking spaces in Püngelerstraße.
Another traffic calming measure is a plateau pavement with a width of 5 m, a length of 3.60 m and a height of 6.5 cm. This is located in the front half of the road and is aligned so that there is a distance of 1.50 m to the property boundaries on both sides to allow pedestrians and cyclists to pass.
Costs
The cost of implementation is currently estimated at approximately 1.1 million euros. At this time, funds have been allocated in the 2026 budget for the implementation of the measure. Implementation of the measures is only possible if the provision of the necessary funds is further secured by a future, legally binding budget. Planning is being conducted exclusively internally.
Residents were involved from 22.8. to 05.09.2025. This took the form of a presentation, which was both available online and on public display.
Decisions on the implementation of measures with costs and financing are reserved for the implementation resolution.
Next steps
As design and construction planning progresses, the goal is to obtain a decision to proceed with construction in the spring of 2027. This would make it possible to begin implementing the measures starting in late 2027.
