Roermonder Straße

Brief info

  • Project:
Roermonder Straße in the Ponttor to Kohlscheider Straße section: adaptation of the road cross-section
  • The aim is to redesign the road in line with the mobility turnaround, taking into account the interests of all modes of transport.
  • Timetable:
    Citizen information 12.11. - 10.12.2025
  • Project phase:
    Preliminary planning
  • Planned implementation:
The Regionetz construction project is scheduled to begin in 2027; the city of Aachen will then rebuild the road.

Current

In the period from 12.11. to 10.12., the administration is conducting a public consultation on the planning. For this purpose, an information event for citizens will take place on 26.11. from 6-8 p.m. in the Generali-Saal of the Super C at Templergraben 57.

Occasion and goal

The expansion of district heating in Aachen is currently a high priority and offers the opportunity to rethink the road cross-sections and traffic routing in the streets affected by the future routes. A route planned in Roermonder Strasse connects Aachen city center to the Schloss Rahe local heating network (see submission FB 68/0091/WP18). Planning by Regionetz is being carried out in construction phases. In the interests of integrated planning, it makes sense to also renovate the sewer, which is in great need of renewal, and to renew further supply lines. The resulting extensive civil engineering work can be used to redesign the roads in line with the mobility transition, but taking into account the needs of all types of traffic and the changing demands on the road space.

The section of Roermonder Straße mentioned above is one of the most important public transport corridors in the city. As a "strong axis" in local transport(FB 68/0189/WP18), it serves commuters into and out of the city and forms various interfaces with other modes of transport. The planning therefore places the acceleration of bus traffic at the forefront of this planning.

Planning

Roermonder Strasse - existing situation

On the section to be planned, all traffic (buses, motorized private transport (MIV), bicycles) is currently routed in mixed traffic on two lanes each going into and out of the city. In the Ponttor to Rütscher Straße section, the carriageway is narrowed so that traffic heading into the city enters the junction's set-up area via an extra-wide lane. Shortly before the Ponttor junction (towards the city), a special bus lane and a protective lane for cyclists will be created.

The cross-section width (house to house) is largely 25.30 m along the route. This includes four lanes for motor vehicle traffic, a green strip with trees in the middle, longitudinal parking lanes on both sides and footpaths.

Three planning approaches were developed, each with a different focus on the acceleration of bus traffic. The creation of rows of trees on both sides is a set framework condition and was taken into account in all concepts.

  • Focus on buses - separation of public transport
The aim of this option is to separate bus traffic from MIT in order to ensure maximum reliability and acceleration for bus traffic. Only reduced widths are possible for the facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Due to the single lane and the necessary prevention of turns, there are restrictions for motorized traffic.
  • Status quo optimized - public transport in mixed traffic
With this variant, the original route for motorized traffic is retained. Bus traffic is dependent on the flow of motorized traffic along the entire route. The installation of roadside stops can make it easier for buses to arrive and depart compared to the existing route. Only (slightly) reduced widths are possible for pedestrian and cycle traffic.
  • Environment Pro - Mix of bus lane (inbound), green lane and reduced traffic
In this variant, bus traffic and motorized traffic are kept separate as far as possible, depending on demand. As a rule, only one lane per direction is available to motor vehicles on the route. If necessary, an additional lane can be provided at junctions. In this way, the newly gained space can be distributed in sections in favor of greenery, bicycle and pedestrian traffic and contribute to improving the quality of the public space. This variant shows an example of an alternative route that provides for a continuous special bus lane towards the city center. It is part of the planning approach to examine whether a special bus lane out of town would be preferable and with what consequences this could be implemented.

Outlook

The concepts presented represent planning approaches that are not mutually exclusive and can be combined if necessary. The section to be planned is approx. 900 m long and has different requirements and possibilities depending on the section. These approaches will be discussed as part of this public participation and the input will be used to continue the planning in a targeted manner. The insights gained will be incorporated into the submission for the planning decision.
