Mobility concept Richterich

The district of Aachen-Richterich is located in the north-west of the city of Aachen and borders the city of Herzogenrath and the Netherlands. Richterich includes the districts of Horbach, Uersfeld, Forsterheide and Ruf. The district is bordered to the south by the highway. The borough has grown in recent decades due to the designation of new residential and commercial areas and will continue to grow in the future, particularly due to the new development area of Richtericher Dell. The residential developments have led and will continue to lead to a sharp increase in traffic congestion, particularly on the main Roermonder Strasse arterial road. This is directly associated with negative effects on the emissions situation (noise, air pollutants), the quality of life and traffic safety with conflicts for all types of traffic.

These include restrictions on sidewalks and visibility, the lack of cycling facilities and bottlenecks in the road space, combined with high levels of car and heavy traffic. The aim of municipal mobility policy is to initiate a traffic turnaround, to reduce CO2 emissions quickly and significantly and to protect the most vulnerable road users in particular, such as children/young people and the elderly, but also pedestrians and cyclists.

Against this backdrop, district politicians called for the creation of a district mobility concept that would help to identify streets with potential hazards in Aachen-Richterich and contribute to an improvement in the overall situation as described above by proposing balanced measures with the involvement of the public.

Task definition

A mobility concept for the Aachen-Richterich district is to be drawn up by an external planning office on the basis of the city-wide plans for the VEP. The results of the mobility concept represent the framework for action for the further traffic development of the district and will be incorporated into the ongoing traffic development planning of the city of Aachen.

The objectives, specifications and requirements of various existing specialist plans must be taken into account when drawing up the Aachen mobility concept and developing action strategies and measures. The following city-wide and urban district plans and concepts relating to transportation must be taken into account during the development process. These include, among others, the cycle priority route network, transport development planning as a process or the Aachen cycling decision

Processing status

The Aachen-Richterich mobility concept was commissioned in February 2025. The planning office has already started its work. In May, an intergroup meeting was held between the administration, the planning office and politicians. Participation formats were agreed on this occasion. The survey of the residents of Richterich is due to take place in mid-June.
