Since April 2026, there has once again been a bike-sharing service in the city of Aachen. Currently, around 360 electric bicycles (pedelecs) are in use throughout Aachen under the name “Euregiobike” and can be rented or returned at 75 stations. Today, Wednesday, September 9, the “Hauptbahnhof” station was opened.

On Monday, September 21, an advertising campaign for Euregiobike will launch: 70 posters will be displayed on Citylights, and approximately 9,000 Citycards with a promo code for trying out the service will be distributed throughout the city. Advertising will also appear on flagpoles, the information kiosk at the Elisenbrunnen, and on the radio. The goal of this advertising campaign is to raise awareness of the Euregiobike bike-sharing system and thereby strengthen eco-friendly transportation in the city and, ultimately, throughout the metropolitan region.

The plan is to operate 500 bicycles and at least 130 stations in the city, the metropolitan area, and in Parkstad Limburg in the Netherlands.

“The Euregiobikes are great bikes; I enjoy riding them,” said Frauke Burgdorff, Aachen’s Deputy Mayor for Construction, Urban Development, and Mobility. During a press conference, she highlighted Aachen’s unique location as a medium-sized city in a hilly region. “That’s why it’s necessary to offer e-bikes in Aachen rather than regular bicycles,” she emphasized.

She went on to say: “If we want to improve our environment, it’s not just about having our own bicycles—it’s also about providing rental bikes for visitors, students, and company employees. This flexibility—the ability to seamlessly use different modes of transportation as part of an integrated transportation system—is truly wonderful. We’re pleased to be able to develop the new bike-sharing service in Aachen together with a very strong and capable partner.”

The city’s partner is Nextbike, a company that already operates its bike-sharing service in many countries and municipalities. “We like medium-sized cities. Aachen plays a special role for us,” said Marco Weigert, Nextbike’s director for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Nextbike is already well established in Cologne, Bonn, and virtually throughout the Rhineland.

“With this service in Aachen, an important hub has been added that connects Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium,” Weigert emphasized. His company is pleased to “to close a gap in the public infrastructure of the Aachen region with Euregiobike. With new e-bikes, a significantly improved service, and integration into the movA app, ‘an attractive, sustainable service for the people of the Aachen region’ has now been launched.”

Expansion into the Region
Uwe Müller, head of the Mobility and Transportation Department, emphasized that Euregiobike is not limited to the city of Aachen. “Several municipalities in the urban region have decided to join the ‘Euregiobike’ bike-sharing system, including the cities of Alsdorf, Baesweiler, Herzogenrath, and Würselen. “Furthermore, several municipalities in the Dutch Parkstad Limburg region have also expressed their general interest in establishing the Euregiobike service in their communities,” said Müller. In addition, there is the possibility that new Euregiobike stations will be set up as part of Aachen’s parking space ordinance, even at new residential projects.

Fares
: A single ride of up to 30 minutes costs 2.50 euros. However, there is also a monthly pass for 33 euros and an annual pass that costs 264 euros.

The implementation of an “overnight rate” is planned by the end of the year: Then, users who—for example—can’t get home from a bus stop late at night will be able to rent a pedelec, take it home, and return it the next morning.

The introduction of a discount for users of public transit passes—such as job tickets, student tickets, and Deutschlandtickets purchased from ASEAG or AVV—is also planned by the end of the year. The first half-hour of riding an Euregiobike will then cost 1.50 euros instead of 2.50 euros. ASEAG, the app developer Better Mobility, and Nextbike are working around the clock to roll out these new rates.

Background
: After the Aachen-based pedelec rental system Velocity had provided bike-sharing services in the city and surrounding region for ten years, the City Council decided on June 13, 2024, to put the system out to bid again. The contract was awarded to Nextbike. Operations began on April 8, 2026. The contract has a term of four years and may be extended for an additional two years thereafter.

Why is bike-sharing necessary?
Bike-sharing is particularly important as a complement to local public transportation (buses and trains). The rental e-bikes are ideal for connecting routes, business trips, or short and long distances within the city, to city districts, and to surrounding municipalities, because the bikes can be rented at one location and returned at another. It’s also easy to park the e-bikes away from the stations—for example, during a stopover or while shopping—without any issues. The rental period continues uninterrupted.

Why e-bikes?
Given Aachen’s topography, electric-assist bicycles are ideal for comfortably navigating hills. This makes the system very attractive as a mode of transportation for the last mile or as a backup to public transit. Across Germany, e-bike systems are on the rise; there is hardly a new municipal tender that does not include them.
