Rolandstraße/Krefelder Straße (Bastei - Soerser Weg)

Bastei view towards Rolandstraße

Brief info

  • Project: Redesign according to regional grid measure
  • Goal: Safe footpaths and cycle paths
  • Timetable: from 2028
  • Project phase: Preliminary planning

Current

Public participation in the planned redesign from 10.02. to 10.03.2026

In December 2025, the Aachen-Mitte district council and the mobility committee publicly discussed the proposal linked here. The administration was commissioned to conduct a public consultation on the planned redesign. This will take place from February 10 to March 10. On February 24, a dialog event was held in the Eurogress. The presentation given there can be found here.

Map

Occasion and goal

The section of the Rolandstraße/Krefelder Straße axis between the "Bastei" junction and Soerser Weg is part of the Aachen - Berensberg cycle priority route(RVR). Cycle traffic is to be routed particularly safely and comfortably here. Extensive work by Regionetz is also planned. Following these construction measures, the road space in the out-of-town direction could be redistributed.

Stock

The street space currently shows deficits in several places (see also the photo compilation in the "Download" section):

  • No cycling facilities (cycle paths, cycle lanes, etc.)
  • Cycle traffic: Turning left into Soerser Weg requires multiple lane changes on the hill with heavy vehicle traffic
  • Traffic light-supported crossing of Krefelder Straße in the Pippinstraße/Elsa-Brändström-Straße axis is missing
  • No footpath available along Krefelder Straße: Footpath documents need
  • Left-sided clearance of the sidewalk for bicycle traffic (in the direction of Bastei) is conflict-prone
  • Path connection between Pippinstraße and Krefelder Straße is barely usable for cyclists
  • Bastei bus stop: Very short bus stop area
  • Rolandstraße: Many vehicles do not park in accordance with the current markings

Planning

Four planning variants were successively developed. The site plans for all variants are available in the "Download" section. Variant 1 and variant 2 were discussed politically in December 2025. Detailed descriptions of these variants can be found in the linked template. Variant 3 and variant 4 were developed following the political discussion. Important aspects as well as advantages and disadvantages of the respective variants are briefly described below:

(variant 1)

A cycle path and a footpath with comfortable and safe widths will be created. This requires extensive intervention in the central area, which separates the directions of travel. At the Soerser Weg junction, there is only one lane for motor vehicles in the direction of Tivoli. However, an analysis has shown that there are still short waiting times for motor vehicle traffic. Variant 1 is currently not being pursued further, as variant 4 follows a similar planning idea, but has better prospects of implementation due to the avoidance of encroachment on the central reservation. The costs for variant 1 are estimated at EUR 1.5 million.

Variant 2

A cycle lane will be created between the "Bastei" bus stop and the junction with Soerser Weg, which will be protected from motor vehicles by separating elements. A new footpath will not be created. The costs for variant 2 are estimated at 600,000 euros.

Variant 3

Between the "Bastei" bus stop and the junction with Soerser Weg, a structural cycle path will be created, but no footpath. As with option 1, a major intervention is made in the central area to create more space. In this variant, the space is used to continue offering two lanes in the direction of Tivoli. This would further reduce the already short waiting times of the other variants. The costs for variant 3 are estimated at 1.5 million euros.

Variant 4

As in variant 1, both a footpath and a cycle lane are created, but with smaller dimensions. The footpath is smaller than the specified standard dimensions. On the other hand, there is no need for structural intervention in the central area, making this variant cheaper than variant 1. The costs for variant 4 are estimated at 1.25 million euros.
