Occasion and goal

The Kornelimünster district council has commissioned the administration to find a structural solution for the non-accessible condition of the sidewalk on Napoleonsberg, house no. 192. In addition, the Napoleonsberg road from "Unter den Weiden" to Korneliusmarkt is in poor condition. Aachener Stadtbetrieb is planning to renovate the second section of the gravity wall along the Inde from the pedestrian traffic lights to Korneliusmarkt.

Condition

Due to the topography of Kornelimünster, there are only the bus stops "Kornelimünster" from which the historic town center with its sights and localities can be reached barrier-free. The bus stop in the direction of Aachen has already been converted to be barrier-free and there is a bridge over the Inde, which is connected to a ramp in the immediate vicinity, making it possible to reach the town center barrier-free. It therefore makes sense to also make the center of Kornelimünster accessible for people coming from Aachen, to expand the footpath connection to the center in a barrier-free manner and to eliminate the functional deficiencies.

Planning

The plan is for the current bus stop bay to be converted into a barrier-free lane stop and moved towards the pedestrian priority traffic lights. In order to prevent unauthorized and dangerous passing of buses stopping there, the traffic lights will be switched to red when a bus approaches the stop. Otherwise, the traffic lights in Kornelimünster should always be switched so that buses on the Napoleonsberg do not have to stop in front of a traffic light.
By removing the bus stop bay, a lot of space is gained for a new footpath and the cross slope in the footpath can be reduced to a maximum of 2.0% in terms of accessibility in accordance with the Din standard. In the new location, the bus stop will also be restored to its full length of 20 meters so that all doors are barrier-free even for articulated buses. Access to the garages of the adjacent residential buildings and the street "Unter den Weiden" will remain unobstructed and the garages can be accessed without maneuvering.
In terms of road safety and accessibility, it is planned to replace the current round kerb along Napoleonsberg street with a threshold stone. The area between the new sidewalk and the buildings will remain at the same level and will be resurfaced with paving stones. Due to changing height conditions, the area will in future be drained via an internal gutter that runs along the sidewalk.
While Aachener Stadtbetrieb is renovating the second section of the retaining wall on the Inde, the renovation of the Napoleonsberg road from Unter den Weiden to Korneliusmarkt will be carried out under full closure. This period will be used to rebuild the bus stop so that the road only has to be closed once. And to minimize the impact on local residents.
