Krakaustrasse

This is what Krakaustraße will look like once the construction work is complete: The sidewalk on the east side (on the left in the picture) will be designed as a "premium footpath". A wide, green area with benches will be created where cars are currently parked. There will only be parking spaces on one side. The roadway will be designed as a cycle lane that is open to motor vehicle traffic.
Brief info
- Project: Road renewal after regional network measure
- Objective: Conversion to cycle lane and premium footpath: initially 10 months from October 2026
- Project phase: Implementation planning
Occasion
Following the renewal of the sewers and pipes by Regionetz GmbH, Krakaustraße is being extensively redesigned. As part of overarching mobility concepts, the redesign is to take particular account of the needs of premium footpath no. 6 to Hangeweiher and the course of the priority cycle route to Preuswald.
The "green premium footpath" variant was decided in the planning resolution.
Condition
The traffic area in Krakaustraße was built according to the separation principle. The sidewalks are separated from the asphalt carriageway by a raised kerb. Longitudinal parking is provided on both sides of the road along the kerb. There is a tree gate in front of the junction with Hubertusstraße. The road surface of Mörgensstraße between Hubertusstraße and Matthiashofstraße is paved.
Citizen participation
A citizens' dialog took place on 3 June 2023 between 2 and 4 p.m. on site in Krakaustraße. After the on-site dialog event in Krakaustraße, the planning was exhibited in the foyer of the Am Marschiertor administration building and all documents were made available on a City of Aachen website created for this purpose. Comments and opinions were collected and evaluated by the administration by the end of August 2023 by email, post and in personal meetings. The collected submissions were summarized thematically and evaluated professionally.
Map
Planning
The plans provide for the creation of a bicycle lane, the upgrading of the sidewalks to a premium footpath and the creation of green spaces.
The cycle lane has a width of 4.20 m and a safety distance of 75 cm from the longitudinal parking lane and 45 cm from the grass verge. This results in a carriageway width of 5.40 m and is built with a one-sided slope. The carriageway is separated from the grass verge by a raised kerb. A longitudinal parking lane with a width of 2.00 m adjoins the western side of the carriageway. There is also a raised kerb between the longitudinal parking lane and the footpath.
The premium footpath runs along the eastern sidewalk of Krakaustraße and is at least 2.50 m wide. The western sidewalk has varying widths between 2.30 and 2.50 m.
The green strip is laid out as a continuous underground tree trench. The eastern sidewalk drains directly into the tree trench. The remaining traffic areas are drained via the sewer.
Costs
According to current estimates, the reconstruction of Krakaustraße will cost around €1,300,000. Funds to implement the measure are earmarked for the 2026 budget, but will only be available after the 2026 budget becomes legally binding, probably in summer 2026. The "Krakaustraße premium footpath" sub-measure is eligible for funding as part of the 2022 city center concept. The approval notice has been available since fall 2023. The relevant costs for the premium footpath amounting to around €900,000 will be funded at 80%. The funding measure must be implemented by the end of 2027.
