The district of Aachen-Eilendorf is located in the east of the city of Aachen and has 15,901 inhabitants (as of 06/2021). The district has grown in recent decades due to the designation of new residential and commercial areas and will continue to grow in the future. The urban developments have led and continue to lead to a sharp increase in traffic congestion, especially on the main traffic axis Von-Coels-Straße.
This is directly associated with negative effects on the emissions situation (noise, air pollutants), the quality of life and road safety with conflicts for all types of traffic. These include restrictions on footpaths and fields of vision, the lack of cycling facilities and bottlenecks in the road space, combined with high levels of car and heavy traffic. The aim of municipal mobility policy is to initiate a traffic turnaround, to reduce CO2 emissions quickly and significantly and to protect the most vulnerable road users in particular, such as children/young people and the elderly, but also pedestrians and cyclists.
Against this backdrop, district politicians called for the creation of a district mobility concept that would help to identify streets with potential hazards in Aachen-Eilendorf and contribute to improving the overall situation as described above by proposing balanced measures with the involvement of the public. The proposals were compiled in an expert report and presented on 14.11.2024(ALLRIS presentation).
Outlook
The district council has yet to prioritize the measures. The administration is integrating the proposals from the mobility concept into a city-wide database. The many suggestions mentioned cannot be implemented in the short term. Safety-relevant aspects are checked for urgency and hazard potential. The information on bus stops will be taken into account in the course of the barrier-free conversion of bus stops. Any road damage identified will be taken into account by the municipal authority as part of its renovation planning. Information that requires the redesign of roads is taken into account when planning road construction projects in Eilendorf.
Citizens of the Eilendorf district can report defects to the administration at any time via the City of Aachen's defect reporting system. A process has been established there by which citizens receive a response to their reports or the defects are rectified as part of routine activities, if possible. The reports are visible to all citizens once they have been activated by the responsible office in the city administration.
