Due to the positive experience with the closure of Akazienstraße in front of the elementary school and the one-way street regulation in Akazienstraße during the highway closure, this will be maintained permanently. There had been a request from Haaren for this, and the Haaren district council was informed about its implementation at its meeting on 10.09.2025. The existing mobile signage is to be changed to permanent signage by the end of the year.

More car sharing! On October 1, 2025, a second cambio car sharing station will open in the center of Haaren.

Background

In addition to the integrated urban development concept for Haaren and the "Haaren priority cycle route" project, a project outline entitled "Haaren cleverly mobile" was successfully submitted to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in December 2021. For funding reasons, the overall concept had to be broken down into individual modules, which led to different start and end times for the sub-projects.

Following the opening of the A544 in September 2025, many measures that have been postponed until now can now be tackled.

(New) mobility services in Haaren

  • Even before the bridge was closed, the "Expansion of public transport" sub-project was launched in fall 2023 with the establishment of an express bus route from Verlautenheide via Haaren-Markt to the university hospital. The Netliner was launched as a combination of a local bus with a timetable and an on-call bus system. The service was optimized in May 2025.
  • The largest project for cycling is the"Haaren priority cycle route" from Verlautenheide to Grabenring in the city center. Work is scheduled to begin here in 2026. In recent years, the accident site on Alt-Haarener-Straße was eliminated by marking a cycle safety lane, among other things. In 2023, a total of 96 bicycle stands were installed at 32 locations that were reported to the administration and where implementation was possible.
  • For pedestrians, the creation of a barrier-free circular route in the center is planned. Following on from the signposting of the hiking routes, the signposting of footpath routes from the center of Haaren to the surrounding countryside, e.g. to the Haarberg, is to be continued. These measures are planned for 2026.
  • There has been a car sharing station with 2 cambio vehicles at the Haaren district office for many years. On October 1, 2025, cambio plans to open another station. Funding has been approved by the state of NRW for two further car sharing stations in Verlautenheide; implementation is to take place in the next few months.
  • One of Aachen's many cargo bikes is available for free use around the clock at the Aachen-Haaren district office. Information on the offer and registration can be found at Aachen.de/lara. There is also one of several bike service stations in Aachen where you can carry out minor repairs yourself.
  • The continuation of the rental system and the positioning of pedelec rental stations in Haaren will take place as part of the reallocation of the city-wide pedelec rental system with physical and virtual stations.
  • ASEAG's movA app is to be further developed in line with demand; among other things, the possibility of "rewarding" environmentally friendly use of transport, which was implemented in the Aachen.move app, is to be integrated here.
  • In September 2025, a dialog and participation project with various components for the evaluation and further development of mobility services in Haaren will start with the opening of the A544. Among other things, a household survey on mobility, city walks, workshops on mobility offers and information stands are to be implemented in close coordination with the district council and the district office.

In order to create a common framework for these mobility offers and to support their use, the measures will be communicated under the common name "HaarenMobil" from fall 2025.

The district of Haaren

The district of Haaren is located in the north-east of the city of Aachen, around 3.5 km from the city center and borders on the towns of Würselen, Eschweiler and Stolberg. Haaren includes the districts of Haaren, Verlautenheide and Quinx as well as the Hüls industrial estate.

12,600 people live here. 17 percent of the population is under the age of 18 (compared to 14.7 percent in Aachen as a whole) and 19 percent are 65 or older (Aachen 17 percent). The average age of the residents is 41.7 years (Aachen 40.6 years).

The district has a district council and a district office with independent citizen services.

The Aachen freeway junction with the A4 to the north, the A44 to the east and the A544 to Europaplatz are highly visible landmarks and boundaries of the district. The construction of the new Haarbachtal bridge, which will be fully closed from January 2024 to September 2025, has led to major traffic congestion in the Haaren district.
