Statistical data

Dashboard on the life situation

In order to make the administration's data more accessible to the population, the municipal statistics office of the city of Aachen is planning to publish dashboards on various topics. The dashboard on the living situation of Aachen residents provides insights into the distribution of different types of households in the basic districts of the city of Aachen.

Dashboards offer the opportunity to make data interactively accessible. Users have the option of making their own adjustments to graphical representations of data. They can thus explore the data themselves and gain their own insights.

In this dashboard, individual factors can be selected via buttons on the dashboard and the individual districts can be accessed via the interactive map for closer inspection. The breakdown of the data into the spatially finely structured basic districts allows precise insights to be generated.

For the city of Aachen, the dashboard shows, among other things, the influence of the high proportion of students in some districts and the differences between city districts and outlying districts. For example, there are many, predominantly young, single-person households in the city center. Families with children and older single-person households are mainly located in the outer districts.

Population projection

For the first time, the City of Aachen (FB02/200 Statistics Office) is preparing its own population forecast for the entire city for the forecast period 2022-2039. Based on scientific analyses and methods and the scenarios derived from them, this shows possible development paths for population development and population structure (see below) and thus serves as an orientation aid and planning basis for medium-term infrastructure and investment planning, e.g. in daycare/school and housing requirements planning.

It should be noted that the calculated future population development is based on "if-then" assumptions. Their underlying characteristics are influenced by medium and long-term changes in the political, economic and social framework conditions as well as by short-term external shocks (e.g. the Ukraine crisis), some of which are difficult to predict.

Aachen in figures

Here, the Statistics and Urban Research team from the Department of Economics, Science, Digitalization and Europe regularly presents typical facts and figures about the city of Aachen. There will be everything from weighty topics to the humor factor.

February 2025: Census - Aachen in structural comparison

Since July 2024, the results of the 2022 census have gradually been published in the Federal Statistical Office's census database. As the survey took place throughout Germany, the data can be used to draw interesting structural comparisons between German municipalities. This edition of "Aachen in Figures" takes a closer look at some aspects in which Aachen stands out from the crowd of German municipalities. All of the data considered comes from the census database and relates to the cut-off date of the survey (February 15, 2022).

  • Demography

Aachen is a student city with significantly more male than female students. This is clearly reflected in the city's demographics. In fact, men between the ages of 20 and 29 made up 13.8 percent of Aachen's population in the census data. This is the highest figure in a German comparison of all municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants and also stands out among university cities. For women in this age group, Aachen ranked 15th in the national comparison with 9.2 percent. The chart below shows the percentage shares of the various age groups in the total population of the municipalities under consideration. The light yellow lines represent the national average. The Aachen values are represented by the dark yellow line.

  • Education

As part of the 2022 census, around 10 percent of the population were asked to provide more detailed information about their living conditions. The highest level of education was one of the characteristics surveyed. The results of the survey were extrapolated to the total population by the Federal Statistical Office. In the data under consideration, the figures for all persons over the age of 15 were taken into account. The influence of students can also be seen here: 35.1 percent of Aachen residents do not (yet) have a vocational qualification. The German average is 26.6 percent. This means that Aachen is also well above the average for German municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants.

Looking at the distribution of educational qualifications, Aachen also stands out in a German comparison. The proportion of people with an academic degree (Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom, Magister or PhD) in Aachen is twice as high as the German average, at 48.8% of vocational qualifications. The proportion of graduates who have completed an apprenticeship or vocational training in the dual system is significantly lower than the national average. Tübingen has the highest proportion of graduates at 63.8%.

  • Living situation and households

The high proportion of students in Aachen is also reflected in the relationship status of residents: at 53.4 percent, more than half of Aachen residents were single as of May 15, 2022. Aachen ranks sixth in the national comparison. Only Tübingen, Marburg, Heidelberg, Freiburg and Giessen had a higher proportion of single residents. 32.5 percent of residents were married or in a registered civil partnership. This figure is ten percentage points below the national average of 42.5 percent. The groups in the corresponding chart with a reference to "marriage" also include the equivalent from registered partnerships. For example, the category "Divorced" also includes people whose registered civil partnership has been dissolved.

The types of household considered in the 2022 census paint a similar picture: The chart below shows the percentage distributions of the different household types in Aachen and the German average. Households with marriages, registered partnerships and non-marital partnerships were grouped together in the "Partnership" category. The first thing that stands out here is the high proportion of single-person households. Here, Aachen is well above the national average. The highest value in the German comparison was found in Regensburg. However, at 58.6 percent, this is only around five percentage points above the Aachen figure. Aachen has the fifth highest proportion of shared flats - namely 6.2 percent. Only Tübingen with 7.0 percent, Heidelberg with 6.6 percent, Marburg with 6.4 percent and Giessen with 6.3 percent achieve higher values here.

Coordinated citizen survey

On behalf of the Statistics and Elections Department of the city's Citizens' Dialogue and Administrative Management Division, the city of Aachen took part in the "Life Satisfaction in German Cities" citizen survey for the third time after 2018 and 2021, which is offered every three years. The focus is on general questions about the city's public tasks, local conditions, personal satisfaction, public transport, the environment and safety.

The aim of the study is to determine life satisfaction in the participating cities. A comparison of the cities makes it possible to differentiate between general municipal developments and specific features of one's own city. This provides the 16 participating cities with important information on the areas in which citizens are satisfied with their city - but also where there are still deficits. The results should help to support current municipal planning and further improve living conditions in the city.

The survey was organized by the IFAK Institute (market and social research) on behalf of the community of cities. Respondents were selected at random on the basis of the population register. The 2,300 Aachen residents determined in this way, who represent the cross-section of the Aachen population, were contacted and were able to participate from 26.08.2024 to 22.10.2024. 886 people took part. This corresponds to an adjusted participation rate of 40.8% (undeliverables are not included). This high participation rate is very pleasing and we would like to thank all citizens who took part in the survey.

Here you can find the answers of Aachen residents on life satisfaction: The 2024 results report contains the results of the other 15 German cities that also took part in the survey for comparison.

Statistical yearbooks

The Statistical Yearbook of the City of Aachen provides an insight into the various facets of city life based on well-founded figures. The figures illustrate the characteristic features of Aachen as a university city with a focus on technical degree courses, as a border city with Belgium and the Netherlands and as a traditional attraction for national and international visitors.

Demographic monitoring

This annual collection of data describes in detail the population structure and development, the composition of age groups and their distribution and development, and illustrates them with thematic maps and other graphics.
