Chess rules
Aim of the game
The aim is to checkmate the opponent's king.
This means that the king is under threat and can no longer save himself.
The figures & how they move
- King: One field in each direction
- Queen: Any number of fields in all directions
- Tower: Straight (horizontal & vertical) as far as possible
- Bishop: Diagonal as far as possible
- Knight: In "L-shape" (horizontally or vertically) and then one square to the side. It can jump over pieces (own or opponent's)
- Bauer:
- Forward one field (two possible on the first move)
- Strikes diagonally

Important rules
- Chess: King is attacked → must be protected
- Checkmate: King can no longer escape → Game over
Castling
: Moving the king and rook at the same time to bring the king to safety
How is it done?
- The king moves two squares in the direction of the tower.
- The rook then jumps over the king to the square directly next to it.
Condition:
- The king and rook have not yet moved in the game and there is no piece between them.
- The king is not in check.
- The king may not move across a threatened square and may not move onto one.
There are two types:
- Short castling: with the rook on the near side (shorter path)
- Long castling: with the rook on the other side (longer path)
En passant: Special strike with farmers
How it is done:
- A pawn may move two squares forward on its first move.
- If it passes an opponent's pawn, it can be captured by the opponent's pawn.
Condition:
- The pawn to be captured must have made a double step from the starting position and be directly next to the opponent's pawn.
- Only then can the opponent's pawn capture en passant, not later.
Pawn conversion
How it is done:
- If a pawn reaches the last row on the opposite side, it turns into another piece.
- All pieces except the king and pawn are possible.
- It is not necessary to use a piece that has already been eliminated, so you can continue playing with two queens or three knights, for example.
- The new figure is placed on the transformation field.
- Draw (tie) e.g. with:
- Stalemate (no move possible, but no check)
- Too few figures
- Repetition of moves
