Safety in Public Spaces: Police and the City of Aachen Take Stock After a Targeted Operation
Last Friday evening (September 25), the police, the City of Aachen, and other network partners conducted a joint targeted operation. The focus was on combating violent crime—particularly crimes involving knives—as well as conducting checks on individuals, vehicles, and businesses.
During inspections of restaurants and bars in the city center, the Public Order and Safety Service (OSD) identified multiple violations of the Restaurant Act and related regulations. For example, at a hookah bar, findings were made regarding the sale of hookah tobacco from bulk containers. This raises suspicions of tax evasion. At other restaurants, it was unclear, among other things, who was operating them. In addition, tax violations were cited, resulting in the city treasury filing claims against the establishments. Furthermore, our colleagues inspected a total of six establishments on Antoniusstraße. Two women who were not carrying valid documentation were prohibited from continuing to work. The police arrested another woman on suspicion of residing in Germany illegally. She did not have a valid residence permit and therefore did not have the corresponding work permit either.
At a kiosk in the city center, OSD officers found—as they had during previous inspections—a large quantity of illegal vapes and Snooz tobacco cans. In addition, the person in charge on site had only expired identification documents, raising doubts about the validity of their work permit. The Department of Public Safety and Order is now investigating whether these findings will result in consequences under commercial law.
At a club and another location in the Ostviertel neighborhood, the city treasury seized four slot machines due to outstanding debts and, with the assistance of the Aachen municipal utility, removed them for further disposal. The use of the entire premises will subsequently be reviewed for compliance with building codes. Furthermore, the suspicion of illegal gambling cannot be ruled out.
This joint targeted operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the police and the city to enhance safety in public spaces. Through a visible presence, targeted checks, and regular communication, the participating authorities aim to identify developments early on, respond consistently to violations, and remain accessible to citizens.
