Local Politics for the Week of September 21–27

Next week, the number of meetings will drop to a total of six over three days, and the schedule will be a bit more manageable again. All meetings will start at 5 p.m.

Tuesday, September 22

The meeting will begin with the Works Council for Aachen City Services. The report on the first half of 2026 for the “Aachen City Services, an institution similar to a municipal enterprise,” is on the agenda. The status report on the ERDF-funded project “KreislaufWIRKstatt Aachen” and Aachen’s first sustainability report will both be presented. The meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Aachener Stadtbetrieb conference room on Madrider Ring.

At the same time—starting at 5:00 p.m.—the Children and Youth Committee will meet in Room 207 of the Mozartstraße administrative building. An oral report on the reform of the Child Education Act is on the agenda. The results of the youth survey “Mitreden in Aachen” will be presented. And two status reports will be presented: one on youth welfare in criminal proceedings and one on the coordination of the child protection network.

Wednesday, September 23

At 5:00 p.m. in the conference room of Aachen City Hall, the General and Finance Committee will convene. Two of the topics on the agenda are: the draft budget of the Aachen City Region for fiscal years 2027 and 2028, and the eastern downtown area—specifically, the “landscape design around the Haus der Neugier” as part of the integrated urban development concept “Büchel Old Town District and Surroundings of the Haus der Neugier”. The committee will also discuss the two expansion projects at the Beeckstraße and Richterich elementary schools.

Thursday, September 24

The Committee on Social Affairs and Demographics will also meet at Aachen City Hall. Starting at 5:00 p.m., topics such as the “Open-ended review of a potential drug consumption room for the city of Aachen,” the “Aachen Contact and Information Center for Self-Help” (akis), and the implementation of the Integrated Concept for Attractiveness and Safety (IKAS) will be presented and discussed.

At 5:00 p.m., the Committee on Schools and Continuing Education will begin its meeting. In Room 207 of the Mozartstraße administrative building, the agenda will also include the two expansion projects at the Beeckstraße and Richterich elementary schools. The results of the youth survey “Mittendrin in Aachen” will also be presented there. The current enrollment figures for Aachen’s schools for the 2026–2027 school year will also be discussed.

The Audit Committee will wrap up the proceedings. It will also meet starting at 5:00 p.m. in the conference room of Haus Löwenstein on the Markt. The main topic of the meeting is the administration’s statement regarding the Audit Committee’s authority to issue audit mandates to the Audit Department based on the existing provisions of the North Rhine-Westphalia Municipal Code and the Audit Regulations. Another topic is a report on the key figures for the first half of 2026.
