The “Rathaus” parking garage is open again

The “Rathaus” parking garage on Mostardstraße has been open to the public again since Monday, September 14. The renovation of the 13,400-square-meter building, which was constructed in 1965, was necessitated by significant structural defects. With approximately 23,000 entries per month to date, the parking garage is one of the most heavily used facilities in APAG’s portfolio. The approximately ten million euros required for the renovation are being shared by APAG (80 percent) and Stadtmarken (20 percent).

“I am very pleased that we can now reopen our parking garage following the extensive renovation. This was only possible because everyone involved worked together from the very beginning. We worked closely and in a spirit of trust with Stadtmarken in particular throughout the entire process. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to this success. Now we can once again offer our customers a modern parking garage right next to City Hall,” emphasizes Simon Papayianni, APAG’s Technical Managing Director.

Here’s how the renovation went: Work
began in January 2025. The concrete repair was completed by the end of 2025. The renovation of the building’s mechanical and electrical systems has been underway since early 2026. APAG made a conscious decision not to open the parking garage partially in June 2026. That decision is now paying off: Instead of opening in November as originally planned, the parking garage can now open fully as early as September 2026—just in time for the fall and pre-Christmas season.

“The successful renovation of the Rathaus parking garage demonstrates that even large, complex projects can be reliably carried out under new technical requirements. Despite additional requirements, APAG’s management was able to complete the project earlier than planned and kept the resulting cost overruns within a predictable range,” emphasizes Achim Ferrari, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Aachener Parkhaus GmbH.

New barriers, “parking mats,” and charging stations for electric vehicles. There have been significant
technical and visual improvements: new electrical systems, LED lighting, and a modern ventilation system. New sprinkler and fire alarm systems will ensure greater safety in the future. The barriers, stairwells, and entry and exit areas have also been renovated. Instead of traditional white lines, colorful “parking mats” now mark the parking spaces on the modernized flooring. A total of approximately 380 parking spaces will be available in the future. This includes ten charging stations for electric vehicles, which will be installed in October.
