The Committee for Equal Opportunities and Integration has elected a new chairperson
Since the start of the new council term on November 1, 2025, the former "Integration Council" (in existence since 2004) of the City of Aachen is now called the "Committee for Equal Opportunities and Integration". Its inaugural meeting took place on January 21. The Committee for Equal Opportunities and Integration is a body in which the interests and issues of people with an international family history are represented. It sees itself as a mouthpiece and representative of the interests of people with a migration background living in Aachen.
The committee is democratically elected every five years and is an integral part of Aachen's municipal policy. In accordance with Section 27 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Municipal Code, the committee reports directly to the Council. All people with a migration background living in Aachen elect 14 representatives to the committee as their members. The city council appoints seven councillors who belong to different political parties.
Mr. Baran Yenen from the list "Hevi - Hope for All" was elected as Chairman of the new committee in the first round of voting. His deputies are Ms. Julia Rejf from the list "WIR für Chancengerechtigkeit und Integration", Ms. Zeynep Özbay from the list "Aachener demokratische Zusammenarbeit" and Mr. Aliston Thevaraj from the list "Migranten für Integration und Teilnahme".
For Baran Yenen, equal participation of all people in the city of Aachen is at the heart of the committee's work: "I would like to thank the members of the committee for the trust they have placed in me. As Chairman of the Committee for Equal Opportunities and Integration, I would like to work to ensure that Aachen remains a city in which diversity is seen as a strength and all people can participate equally, regardless of their origin, social situation or reality of life. My work will focus on the consistent reduction of discrimination, the strengthening of participation structures and close cooperation with civil society initiatives and migrant self-organizations. For me, integration does not mean adaptation, but equal participation in shaping our urban society."
