The railroad bridge over Trierer Straße at Rothe Erde station needs to be repaired. In March 2024, a truck got stuck on part of the bridge and damaged it.

Deutsche Bahn AG is the client and is having the damaged cross girder of the bridge replaced by the end of May 2026. To this end, the railroad line between Aachen and Cologne will also be closed on the section between Aachen main station and Rothe Erde/Stolberg from May 17 to June 2. The closure on the railroad line has been planned for a long time due to the bridge repairs. The bridge is therefore now being repaired.

The bridge renovation work on the road will begin on Monday, May 4. The two out-of-town lanes of Trierer Straße between Reichsweg and Robert-Koch-Straße will be closed. The wide sidewalk running parallel to the bridge, which is also open to cyclists, will also be affected. It will also be closed.

Motor vehicle traffic

All motorized traffic in both directions will be shifted to the three lanes on the other side of the road. Towards the city center, all motor vehicles will be diverted under the bridge to the bus lane. The right-hand motor vehicle lane will not be available during the construction period because a support pillar for the bridge is being placed there. Motor vehicles coming from Adalbertsteinweg will be guided in one lane from the junction with Goerdelerstraße in the direction of Forst, Driescher Hof and Brand and diverted to the left-hand, normally oncoming lane at Reichsweg.

Access to Reichsweg is also blocked, regardless of which direction drivers are coming from. The Reichsweg itself can only be left in the direction of the city center, turning left in the direction of Brand is not possible. Access to the delivery road along Aachen-Arkaden will also be closed in the direction of Trierer Straße.

Bus transport

The bus stop in front of the Aachen-Arkaden in the direction of the city center will remain in operation as usual. However, the bus stop opposite will have to be removed and will be moved to the stop between Goerdelerstrasse and Beverstrasse. All buses in the direction of Forst, Driescher Hof, Brand and Südraum will stop there. The changes to bus services will apply from 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning, May 5.

The loading zone there will be closed until the repair work is completed.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic

The Vennbahnweg can be used throughout the construction period. However, the pedestrian and cycle crossing at the level of Vennbahnweg and Aachen-Arkaden will be closed during the construction work. All pedestrians and cyclists will be guided in both directions across Trierer Straße via the crossing at the Reichsweg junction, which is secured by traffic lights. Pedestrians can also use the pedestrian tunnel at the entrance to Rothe Erde station. Cyclists must push their bikes through the tunnel.
