Time travel at Kaiserplatz: three pictures tell the history of the square
Since September 19, 2025, passers-by at Kaiserplatz 18 have been able to take a special look into the past: Three large-format historical photographs show how the square has changed over more than 70 years. The images printed on aluminum composite panels show the square and its surroundings in the years 1893, around 1900 and 1960, thus making the urban development of Kaiserplatz impressively visible.
The installation brings a piece of Aachen's history to life in the midst of everyday life. The images invite visitors to rediscover the square and better understand its historical significance over the course of time. At the same time, they contribute to enhancing the design of the square.
The measure is part of the city of Aachen's Integrated Concept for Attractiveness and Safety (IKAS) and is one of the "measures in public spaces" of the integrated city center approach. With this approach, the city of Aachen is pursuing, among other things, the goal of making the city center more attractive and livable.
Jonas Rohlfing from the Kaiserplatz coordination office explains: "The three motifs will remain permanently installed at Kaiserplatz 18. They should not only contribute to the beautification, but also encourage a new perception of Kaiserplatz as an important part of Aachen's city history."
