Election committee determines: mayoral run-off election required
At its meeting on Monday, September 15, the Election Committee of the City of Aachen unanimously determined that no candidate for the election of the Lord Mayor of Aachen on election Sunday, September 14, received more than half of the valid votes cast.
The Local Elections Act stipulates: "If none of several candidates receives more than half of the valid votes, ... a run-off election shall be held between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes in the first election." A run-off election is therefore required.
Michael Ziemons achieved the most votes with 43,860 and Sibylle Keupen with 35,587. The run-off election between the two candidates will take place on Sunday, September 28 between 8 am and 6 pm.
A total of 108,175 valid votes were cast, said Dr. Markus Kremer, Head of Elections, at the committee meeting.
