Renovation of the Pauwelsstrasse bridge
The Pauwelsstraße bridge will be renovated from the middle of the 39th calendar week. The prestressed concrete bridge from 1980 is damaged and therefore no longer safe for traffic. In order to prevent further consequential damage, the bridge will be completely repaired. The work is extensive and highly dependent on the weather; the estimated construction time is six months.
Damage to the bridge is mainly documented in the wearing parts. These include the road surface and the associated waterproofing, the caps on which the footpaths run, the bearings, the transition structures at the ends of the structure and the drainage pipe. In addition, there are several points on the underside of the superstructure where measures are required to repair the concrete surface.
The work will be carried out in several construction phases. The bridge will be closed on one side at a time. Traffic will be guided past the construction site on one side using a one-way system. Access to the university hospital's emergency department will therefore remain possible at all times via Pauwelsstraße.
The exit from the emergency room is via the service road below the bridge over the P1 parking lot in the direction of Kullenhofstraße. A new barrier system has been set up for this purpose, at which a short-term ticket can be drawn for free exit at the P1 exit.
Emergency vehicles can still leave the emergency room via Spindel in the direction of Pauwelsstraße.
Pedestrians can also cross the bridge during the construction period; cyclists can use the sidewalk with consideration for pedestrians.
Coordination talks on the construction work and traffic routing were held with Aachen University Hospital, the fire and rescue services and Aseag.
Given the poor condition of the structure, this measure is absolutely essential at this point in time and cannot be postponed. This is the only way to guarantee that road safety is maintained for all road users on the Pauwelsstraße bridge.
