Abteigarten: embankment walls on the Inde are being repaired
At the Abteigarten in Kornelimünster, the embankment walls on both sides of the Inde are being repaired. The maintenance work, which is the responsibility of the Road Maintenance and Bridge Construction department of Aachen's municipal services, involves repairing age-related damage. The extensive work on the natural stone retaining wall will begin on Monday, June 23. The planned construction time is expected to be nine months.
As part of the preliminary and design planning, the planned measures were coordinated with the lower monument authority. For example, in order to preserve the characteristic, uniform appearance, the renovation of the Inde retaining wall is to be carried out in such a way that the original natural stone appearance is preserved as far as possible. To this end, scaffolding must be erected in the stream bed, taking into account the corresponding water protection requirements. A hydraulic calculation of the flow velocity in advance had shown that the bank walls should not be scaffolded in parallel, but only one after the other. In this way, the watercourse is not unnecessarily constricted.
To repair the masonry, the base of the wall must first be renovated. To do this, the wall is underpinned and a scour protection is installed to protect the base of the wall from foundation damage. Later, the natural stone surfaces of the retaining walls are renovated with a lime-based jointing material. The dilapidated parapets will also be replaced with new railings.
The parking lot, part of the "Abteigarten" carriageway and the adjacent footpath will be closed during the construction period due to the construction site area. No stopping signs have been erected accordingly. The traffic-calmed zone will be extended: the area currently ends at the pedestrian bridge, but for the construction period the zone will be extended to the access road to the elementary school. The relevant area of Abteigarten street will be signposted as a traffic-calmed zone accordingly.
The hiking trail along the structure (on the Napoleonsberg side) will be fully closed during the construction work. Transportation operations by the construction company may lead to temporary restrictions on the bridge.
