Europaplatz: Construction work is finished, the fountain is bubbling again
The city's construction work on Europaplatz was largely completed this week. Traffic on the square is flowing again in almost all directions. Only the entrance and exit of the A 544 is still closed. In addition, the fountain with its impressive water feature has been put back into operation.
Redesign of Europaplatz
During the construction work, the so-called ancillary facilities and the crossings on the carriageways of Joseph-von-Görres-Straße and in and out of Blücherplatz were renewed. A section of the footpath and cycle path around Europaplatz was separated by a new green area. The cycle path in the traffic circle was asphalted in red throughout.
Benches and garbage cans will be installed in the coming weeks. The lighting on the square has been added. New trees will be planted in the new green space in spring 2026. Regionetz renewed the gas, water and electricity pipes in the area of the A 544. The construction work by Regionetz and the city began in November 2024 and was largely completed in July 2025.
The conversion of Europaplatz cost 1.15 million euros. Up to 80 percent of the costs will be covered by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with funding from the Aachen-Nord Socially Integrative City project.
Fountain on Europaplatz bubbles again
The fountain on Europaplatz with its impressive water feature went back into operation on Wednesday, July 30. The water was last drained from the fountain basin in October 2023. In 2024, the city refrained from filling it and switching it on. Important construction work by Regionetz on the sewer system and water pipes had been delayed, meaning that the system could not have been switched back on until July/August 2024.
The city decided against this for various reasons. Firstly, the pool would have had to be filled with around 3,500 cubic meters of fresh water, a huge amount of water. Secondly, the A 544 highway was closed and traffic on Europaplatz had significantly reduced. And thirdly, the fountain would only have been reactivated for a relatively short time until October.
In summer 2024, the city therefore decided to seal the fountain basin with a view to the 2025 season and to renew the technical and electrical equipment. This renovation has now been completed.
The fountain dates back to 1958 and covers an area of around 8000 square meters. The basin has a diameter of 100 meters. 26 water jets spray the water upwards. 35 highly efficient LED spotlights illuminate the water feature in the evening.
According to the Autobahn-Gesellschaft, the A 544 highway will be reopened on September 8.
Weather permitting, the fountain will remain switched on until late fall this year.
