Roadway renovation on Eupener Straße from August 4

Aachener Stadtbetrieb is having the road surface between Jahnplatz (Luxemburger Ring/St.-Vither-Straße) and Diepenbenden extensively resurfaced as part of the major asphalt works on Eupener Straße. The work will be carried out during the summer vacation from Monday, August 4 to Tuesday, August 26.

Detour

The renovation area must be closed to out-of-town traffic. In the direction of Belgium, a detour will be signposted from Jahnplatz via St.-Vither-Straße, Siegelallee and Monschauer Straße to the highway in the direction of Eynatten/Belgium. From Diepenbenden, traffic heading into the city will be routed via a one-way system. The route from Luxemburger Ring to the junction in the direction of St.-Vither-Straße will have to be discontinued during the construction period, as the remaining lane widths are not sufficient according to the experts. Therefore, the detour from Ronheider Weg/Weißhausstraße to Eupener Straße must be taken.

A detour via Am Chorusberg is not possible: there are no ancillary facilities (footpath and cycle path) and all road users would have to share a width of 3.5 meters. In the opinion of the experts from the specialist administration, this is not justifiable. The same applies to the streets Eberburgweg, Grindelweg and Höfchensweg. Removing the bollards used there and opening up the area would lead to a high volume of traffic, as not only residents would choose this route. What's more, the small streets are not able to accommodate traffic detour on the scale of a main road. Unfortunately, a traffic light solution is also out of the question, as the construction route is too long. The backlog, especially on the side towards the city, would lead to a complete standstill of traffic.

Waste collection and rescue services

Waste collection, delivery services and the post office will follow the detour. As part of the detour planning, the emergency services were informed about the renovation work; access to the affected areas by the fire department, police and emergency services is guaranteed at all times, including through the use of special rights.

Renovation of the cycle paths

The ancillary facilities are not currently affected, meaning that pedestrian and cycle traffic will continue to be possible without restriction. The ancillary facilities will be renovated at a later date, as different material is being used than for the asphalt renovation, which in turn requires different paving equipment. If the work were to run in parallel, the respective companies would restrict each other and the one-way regulation, which is made possible for the construction period in the direction of the city center, would have to be omitted.

Full closure in the 34th calendar week

In the 34th calendar week, the asphalt surface will be laid and the final road markings applied. No motor vehicle traffic will then be permitted for two and a half days in the entire roadway area described above and the construction site will be completely closed. The final remaining work will then be carried out under half-closure. It is strongly recommended not to walk on the road surface prepared with adhesive, as there is a risk of permanently staining clothing. The same applies to driving vehicles. Parking is prohibited during the entire construction period. The work may cause noise and dirt nuisance. Appropriate protective measures will be taken to keep this to a minimum.

Changes in the parking area following the renovation work

As the current width of the parking lanes no longer complies with current regulations, they will have to be re-marked in accordance with the new regulations once the road has been renovated. In order to ensure a sufficiently wide lane for buses to pass, it is necessary to reduce parking to one side on the entire section. This is the only way to ensure that Eupener Straße continues to fulfill its function in Aachen's bus network. The corresponding marking plan was approved by the Mobility Committee on May 15.

Bus transport

The construction site was deliberately scheduled for the summer vacations in order to exclude school traffic and thus reduce the restrictions to a necessary minimum. Aseag is adapting its timetables for lines 34 and 54 during the partial and full closure: From the St.-Vither-Straße stop via Salierallee, St.-Vither-Straße, Eupener Straße, Giselastraße, Salierallee, to the Giselastraße stop and continuing along the usual route. As a replacement for the Jahnplatz and Diepenbenden stops, an overlay stop will be set up in Eupener Straße, in front of house number 197. The stop at St.-Vither-Straße in the direction of the city center will not be replaced.

During the partial closure, route 14 will follow the designated detour from the Ronheider Weg stop via Eupener Straße, St.-Vither-Straße, Siegelallee, Monschauer Straße to the highway to Eupen. All stops from Diepenbenden to Hauset will be canceled. Instead of the Jahnplatz stop, an alternative stop will be set up in Eupener Straße, in front of house number 196.

During the two-and-a-half-day full closure, route 14 will follow the detour described above in both directions. A replacement stop will be set up in the Jahnplatz area at number 197 Eupener Straße.

In view of the poor condition of the road surface, it is imperative that the asphalt is repaired at this point in time and that the work is carried out during the vacation period due to the importance of Eupener Straße for traffic. This is the only way to ensure that road safety is maintained for all road users on Eupener Straße in the long term.
