"Water in sight": hands-on activity at the Elisengarten
Publicly accessible drinking water should not only be available, but also visible and known. The City of Aachen is therefore inviting children and young people to take part in the "Water in Sight" campaign on Saturday, July 5, between noon and 4 p.m. around the Elisengarten between the Rotunda and the drinking water fountain on Ursulinerstraße. The event is part of the two-day "1st Aachen Water Route" on July 5 and 6, which is being organized by the Institut für die Europäische Stadt e. V. and the Domviertel interest group, among others.
Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen emphasizes: "I am delighted that our initiatives to revitalize the city centre are being actively complemented and developed hand in hand by the interest groups. Together we are tackling Aachen's future. We can already see the successes in many places."
Creative participation around drinking water
Guests can look forward to a colorful hands-on program: they can mark their wishes for new locations for drinking water access points on a 20 square meter city map or get creative themselves and design pennants for a long garland from the Elisengarten to the drinking water fountain on Ursulinerstraße. In addition, spray chalk will be used to create a temporary path marking on the sidewalk leading to the fountain. With a bit of luck, visitors can also win a drinking bottle to refill.
Hands-on activities like these are part of the city center morning process. Kyra Pfeil, City Manager of the City of Aachen, explains: "We take up important concerns from the urban community and implement them in concrete actions. With the drinking water fountain campaign, for example, we are addressing the current topic of heat protection, coupled with the approach of giving children and young people more space to shape Aachen's city center."
Registration is not required, participation is free of charge.
The "Tool Box for the City Centre", a collection of opportunities for Aachen residents to get involved, offers numerous additional and permanent options for active participation - from disposal funds to the use of vacant properties and dialog formats. The toolbox is available as a print product at the Servicecenter Katschhof and at the OecherLab citizens' meeting point or online at www.innenstadt-morgen.de.
