Registering and re-registering your place of residence: now possible online
Aachen residents can now register or re-register from the comfort of their own home. The City of Aachen's new online service enables digital registration and re-registration after moving within Aachen or from another city in Germany to Aachen and is therefore a convenient alternative to registering your place of residence at the local citizen service center.
The new service, which was jointly implemented by the Citizen Services and Digital Administration and IT Management departments as part of the City of Aachen's digitalization strategy, digitalizes the entire registration and re-registration process, from changing address data in the residents' register to updating ID cards, and can be done from the comfort of your own home at any time of day. A visit to the citizen service center is no longer necessary.
Who can use the service
The service is available to all persons of legal age with a German ID card or European eID card in the service portal of the City of Aachen who wish to register their main, secondary or sole residence in Aachen. To use the online service, the online ID function of the ID card or eID card must be activated.
"Electronic residence registration is an important milestone on our way to becoming a modern and service-oriented service provider. It offers convenient access to a frequently required administrative service, is user-friendly and innovative and offers citizens a simple and convenient way to register their place of residence without having to go to the authorities," explains Bettina Kuca, Head of the Citizens' Service Department.
Successful subject test
Before the start of the electronic residence registration, volunteers from Aachen have been testing it over the last few weeks. Questions or problems were identified and solutions developed. "We want to provide citizens with the best possible support when using the online service and also guide them through the service by telephone if necessary. To do this, it is important that we know the difficulties in advance and prepare our service center agents in the best possible way. The test subject test helped us a lot with this," explains Deputy Head of Department Stefan Ganser.
Kuca and Ganser hope that many (new) citizens will see the online residence registration as a relief and that it will be used actively. However, they have one request: "If the online service makes an appointment you have already made at the Citizens' Service obsolete, please cancel it." Because the pressure of appointments is still very high.
Anyone who has questions about the online service or needs assistance can contact the colleagues at the Servicecenter Call Aachen on 115 from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. The 115 is the nationwide public authority number where citizens can reach the customer service of participating municipalities, federal states and federal authorities. It is the first point of contact for administrative questions of all kinds.
