Bismarckstraße: Reconstruction starts on April 7

Bismarckstraße is an important and central traffic axis in the Frankenberg district. From April 7, it will be completely rebuilt in sections. During this reconstruction, significant structural defects will be eliminated, the street space will be redistributed and given an attractive urban design. In future, 19 new trees will line the street on the side with the odd-numbered houses. The situation for cyclists will be improved by the creation of a cycle lane. Overall, the quality of life on Bismarckstrasse will be significantly enhanced by the conversion.

In the next few days, the city will provide further information on its website aachen.de in the form of a detailed presentation set to music. Interested parties can find it here: www.aachen.de/bismarckstrasse

Construction will take place in two phases

The reconstruction of Bismarckstrasse will take around two and a half years. Work will be carried out in two construction phases. As both sections are relatively long, they will each be realized in three subsections.

The first construction phase will start on April 7 at the intersection of Bismarckstrasse, Schlossstrasse and Rehmannstrasse and continue to Neumarkt and the corner of Triebelsstrasse. After completion of the first construction phase, a second phase is expected to start in the second half of 2026 at the intersection of Bismarckstrasse, Drimbornstrasse, Schenkendorfstrasse and Beverstrasse and will extend in three construction phases to the Triebelsstrasse/Neumarkt intersection.

Construction phase 1

In construction phase 1, the intersection of Bismarckstrasse, Schlossstrasse and Rehmannstrasse will be redesigned first (subsection 1). After the start of construction, Rehmannstraße will not be accessible to private vehicles until July 2025. This will be followed in a second construction phase by the conversion of Bismarckstraße up to the Haßler-/Goffartstraße junction (subsection 2). From here, the project will continue to Neumarkt, where Bismarckstraße will be extended to the level of Triebelsstraße (subsection 3).

Construction phase 2

The second construction phase will then begin at the intersection of Bismarckstrasse, Drimbornstrasse, Schenkendorfstrasse and Beverstrasse (subsection 4). Work will continue on Bismarckstraße in the direction of Viktoriaallee (subsection 5) and finally the section between Viktoriaallee and Neumarkt/Triebelsstraße will be redesigned. (subsection 6).

Effects of the construction work

The houses, stores and businesses in the six subsections can be reached on foot throughout. There will be no parking spaces for cars during the construction work in the individual subsections.

All construction work is coordinated with the fire and rescue services. Rescue access is therefore guaranteed at all times. This also applies to the Rehmannstraße cul-de-sac.

Detour routes change

Detour for motor vehicles and bicycles will be signposted. The possible routes into the Frankenberger Viertel will change during the construction period of two and a half years.

Police will monitor overtaking ban

Cyclists may not be overtaken by motor vehicles on Oppenhoffallee. The police have announced that they will monitor the overtaking ban.

Alternative routes for cycling

Those wishing to avoid the detour route via Oppenhoffallee can also take other routes past the Bismarckstraße roadworks, depending on their destination. One route, for example, leads from Bismarckstraße via Viktoriaallee, Viktoria-, Sophien- and Luisenstraße to Brabantstraße in the first construction phase. A second begins at the forecourt of Rothe Erde station, uses the "green promenade Aachen-Ost" to the Montessori comprehensive school and leads from there via Bergische Gasse and Moltkestraße back to Bismarckstraße. The green promenade is a former railroad line that has been converted into a pedestrian and cycle path.

In coordination with the city, Regionetz will be working on Goffartstrasse over the next few months in parallel to the road construction work on Bismarckstrasse and will be replacing all underground lines there. At the end of the work, Regionetz will pave a new carriageway on Goffartstrasse. Once all the construction work has been completed, the first sections of the rebuilt Bismarckstrasse and Goffartstrasse will be reopened so that cycle traffic can be rerouted via Frankenberger Strasse and Goffartstrasse through the Frankenberger Viertel.
