The Aachen City Archive regularly presents interesting items from its stacks as Archive of the Month. The item with a short accompanying text is presented in a display case in the foyer of the city archive on Reichsweg as well as digitally on the archive's homepage. In April 2025, the archival item of the month shows an announcement from the municipal food office dated March 17, 1945 regarding the special issue of eggs.
While the fighting was still going on in parts of the German Reich, the civil administration of the city of Aachen took care of the supply of the population returning to Aachen in March 1945. Due to the general shortage, food continued to be allocated; a special administration had been set up for this purpose with the Food Office.
The surrounding farms were integrated into a management system that regulated and controlled production, purchasing by public authorities and distribution. For example, food rations were set for children and adults; since December 1944, children up to the age of two were entitled to three quarters of a liter of milk a day, three to six-year-olds to half a liter, people aged 65 and over to a quarter of a liter, sick people to half a liter to a liter depending on their medical certificate, and pregnant women and nursing mothers to half a liter of milk a day. The milk was only distributed on weekdays.
For the first Easter after the end of the Second World War in Aachen, at least the children and young people were to receive a tangible gift associated with Easter to enhance the celebrations. Easter Sunday fell on April 1 in 1945. A notice announced that all Aachen children up to the age of 14 could collect two extra eggs once during Holy Week from ten designated stores. The collection was noted on the "Kindersonderkarte 2", a ration card, in order to avoid multiple collections. The notice was approved in advance by an officer of the US occupation forces.
