Aachen in figures Sepetmber 2024: Senior citizens in Aachen

The proportion of senior citizens in the overall population has also grown steadily in Aachen in recent years. But where and how do they live? People over the age of 60 are considered senior citizens. On June 30, 2014, the number was 57,813 (23.3 percent). On June 30, 2024, there were 64,063 senior citizens living in Aachen (24.5 percent). This included 37 people in the 100+ age group.

Age structure and gender ratio

On average, women live longer. This is also reflected in the Aachen data: In the age group 60 to 64 inclusive, women are still slightly outnumbered with a share of 49.3%. In the older age groups, however, the proportion of senior citizens is steadily decreasing. On June 30, 2024, there were 30 female and seven male senior citizens aged 100 and over living in Aachen. The proportion of men here was 18.9 percent.

Once you reach the age of 100, you also belong to a very small subgroup of the population in Aachen. In July 2024, the share of the 100+ age group was just 0.014 percent. The number of people in this age group has not changed fundamentally since 2014. In 2014, the number was 56: it peaked in 2022 at 61.

Senior citizens in the urban area

The proportion of senior citizens in the city center and the outlying districts differs significantly. The Ponttor (11 percent), St. Jakob (12.3 percent) and Markt (13.6 percent) statistical districts had the lowest percentages on June 30, 2024. The districts of Steinebrück (38.4 percent), Walheim (38.3 percent) and Richterich (35.1 percent) had the highest percentages.

Life situation

On average, 28.5 percent of senior citizens in Aachen live at addresses that are exclusively occupied by senior citizens. The map below shows these percentages for the statistical districts. In the districts of Panneschopp (1.5 percent), Frankenberg (2.9 percent) and Marschiertor (3.5 percent), the fewest senior citizens live in addresses occupied exclusively by senior citizens. In these districts, the majority of senior citizens live together with younger people in the same house. The districts with the highest proportion of senior citizens in senior addresses are Beverau (58.8 percent), Wahlheim (53.3 percent) and Richterich (51.5 percent).
