Paths to climate-neutral living: Participants from Aachen wanted for nationwide long-term study KliX³

Everyone can make a contribution to climate protection. But which measures are effective and which are suitable for individual and current life situations? The KliX³ project is conducting a nationwide long-term study on thecarbon footprint of private households in collaboration with the Federal Environment Agency and the University of Freiburg. Research is being conducted into how climate-neutral living can be achieved and what obstacles and successes can be seen in everyday life. "The KliX³ project not only helps to collect important and long-term research results. It offers all Aachen residents the opportunity to create their own individual climate plan, to find their way through the maze of climate protection measures and to critically review and evaluate their own actions time and again. Added value for both sides," says Heiko Thomas, Aachen's Councillor for Climate and Environment, City Operations and Buildings, with conviction.

KliX³ in Aachen
As one of 30 partner municipalities, the city of Aachen is supporting the project and is calling on interested citizens to voluntarily take part in the study from January 2025. Citizens can now register on the website klix3.de/veranstaltung/klix3-auftakt-in-aachen or by email at kontakt@klix3.de. Participation and all associated offers are of course voluntary and free of charge.

All interested parties are then invited to an information event, which will take place on Thursday, January 16, 2025, 5 to 7 pm, at the OecherLab, Kapuzinergraben 19D, in Aachen, where the exhibition and event series "Aachen 2030 - Climate Neutral, but How?" will continue to take place until March 2025. All information on the exhibition and series of events as well as lots of information on the EU mission "Aachen Climate Neutral 2030" and climate protection in Aachen can also be found at www.aachenklima.de.

Conceptual basis
The content of the project is based on the "Triad for the Climate" developed by the "3 fürs Klima" association with the elements 1) creatinga carbon footprint with the Federal Environment Agency's calculator, 2) reducing the footprint with small and large measures in everyday life and 3) increasing the handprint with commitment, climate-friendly compensation and financial investment for climate protection. Every path to a climate-neutral life is individual and depends on your own life situation. KliX³ shows possible small and large steps and concentrates on "big points" with great leverage.

The basic elements of KliX³

  • Contributing to the long-term study: Using the Federal Environment Agency'sCO2 calculator to determine their ownCO2 balance once a year provides participants with a basis for navigating the jungle of climate protection measures. Based on the current status, they can see which short- and medium-term measures are sensible and feasible. Participants also have the opportunity to learn more about the background to the calculator and the course of the study.
  • Get started with the KliX³ toolbox: KliX³ offers the opportunity to create a personal climate plan for more climate protection in everyday life. There are many ideas, but where should you start? The KliX³ toolbox playfully guides participants on the path to a climate-neutral life. Instead of juggling many loose ends, they can use this online toolbox to create their own personal climate plan in six modules.
  • In-depth online workshop: Participants are invited to take part in a three-part online workshop. In each module, one aspect of the "triad" is examined in detail. An essential component of these workshops is the exchange of ideas: because climate protection is teamwork. What's more, climate protection is more fun together. There is also plenty of room for personal questions.

About the nationwide KliX³ project
KliX³ is funded by the National Climate Initiative with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. KliX³ was initiated by the association "3 fürs Klima" (www.3fuersklima.de) and KlimAktiv (www.klimaktiv.de).

"3 fürs Klima" is a non-profit association with the aim of creating and spreading awareness and knowledge about effective individual action options for climate protection in accordance with the Paris goal and has attracted nationwide attention and saved over 20,000 tonsof CO2 in 2021 with the "climate bet" (www.dieklimawette.de).

KlimAktiv gemeinnützige Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Klimaschutzes mbH develops software forCO2 balancing for companies, municipalities and other organizations and enables its partners to actively protect the climate by raising awareness of their ownCO2 balance.

Associated partners of KliX³ are the Federal Environment Agency, the University of Freiburg and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
