8.6 million euros for urban development: Aachen is delighted to receive funding
At the end of October, the city of Aachen received three funding decisions with a total funding amount of 8.6 million euros for urban development. This makes Aachen one of the top municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia to receive funding. A large part of the money will go towards the redesign of Theaterplatz.
Mayor Sibylle Keupen received the certificates personally from the President of the District Government, Dr. Thomas Wilk, in Cologne. Keupen said on the sidelines of the event: "Aachen is tackling the future. We are proving this in numerous places in our city and we are receiving a lot of attention for this throughout the state and country. The funding is helping us to a large extent to achieve the ambitious goals we have developed together with citizens and politicians. A lot will visibly happen in the coming months and years, especially around Theaterplatz. I look forward to tackling these tasks with our many supporters and shaping the city of the future together."
The money will go towards the following projects:
- The redesign of Theaterplatz with the second construction phase Theaterstraße to Borngasse and the new guideline for outdoor gastronomy as part of the 2022 city center concept (total funding of approx. 7.1 million euros).
- The upgrading of playgrounds on Branderhofer Weg and Forster Weg, the redesign of an experienceable Gillesbach valley with a north/south connection, an intergenerational expansion as well as rest and exercise stations. Financial support is also being provided for a disposition fund to promote activities in the district (total funding of approx. 1.3 million euros).
- The implementation of "Kunst am Bau" projects in Haaren, in particular at the entrance to Kaninsberg (approx. 240,000 euros in funding).
"We are delighted about the funding, which will have a tangible impact in many places in Aachen. Now we are rolling up our sleeves to turn the good plans into reality in the coming years," continued Aachen's City Planning Councillor Frauke Burgdorff. With the projects that have now been approved, further important measures will be implemented in current development areas on the basis of existing integrated urban development concepts. In the coming years, the city of Aachen will increasingly focus its urban development funding on the eastern city center and the Forst area.
