The Johannisbach at Lindenplatz

A successful example is the Johannisbach stream at Lindenplatz. The open stream shows how water can make public spaces more attractive. It creates a pleasant atmosphere, encourages people to linger, and at the same time helps the city better adapt to the effects of climate change.

Right in the heart of downtown Aachen, the Johannisbach has been bringing new life to Lindenplatz since 1999. After more than 100 years, the stream is once again flowing openly through the city here—an important step toward improving the quality of life in the urban environment.

Over a stretch of about 400 meters, the stream channel follows the natural course of the water. The flowing water not only creates a special atmosphere but, together with the old linden trees, also contributes to a more pleasant urban climate. At the same time, flood protection remains ensured, as part of the water continues to be diverted underground.

With the renovation of the playground in 2023, the Johannisbach became an adventure for young and old alike. A widened stream bed, boulders, and water features invite visitors to explore, play, and linger. In this way, Lindenplatz uniquely combines climate adaptation, nature, and the urban experience.
