Klappergasse and Rennbahn

The city is redesigning key areas in the downtown core. In doing so, it is guided by the principle of “making Aachen’s streams visible and accessible.” In some places, the streams currently flow underground. Wherever possible, the water will be made visible again. At the same time, more green spaces and water features are being created. This improves the urban climate and helps cool the city, creating places where people enjoy spending time even on hot summer days.

The project

Klappergasse and Rennbahn are being redesigned. The areas adjacent to the streets will also be improved. An open waterway, new trees, and more greenery will create a pleasant environment. New play areas and seating areas will be added. Traffic areas will be converted into green spaces. This will allow rainwater to seep away more effectively and help keep the area from overheating in the summer. The redesign aims to better prepare the downtown area for the effects of climate change. At the same time, it seeks to enhance the quality of life and make living in the downtown area more enjoyable. Another goal is to make the area’s history visible and tangible, thereby fostering a sense of connection among residents and their neighborhood.

Schedule

In September 2026, Regionetz will begin expanding the district heating network on Klappergasse and a short section of Bendelstraße. Construction will take about 6 months. In September 2027, the city will begin the redesign of Klappergasse and Rennbahn. The project, which includes a water feature, a new playground, and many new trees and green spaces, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. Work in areas of historical interest will be monitored by archaeologists. Klappergasse, Rennbahn, and Bendelstraße are among these areas. Historical finds at either construction site could lead to an extension of the construction period.
