The political consultation (implementation decision) took place on 11.12.2024. The measure is to be implemented from spring 2025 together with the final road expansion of the 2nd construction phase of the Brand business park, as these measures are locally connected and follow on from each other.

Occasion and goal

With the planning resolution of 29.04.2020, the Aachen-Brand district council commissioned the administration to prepare the implementation planning for the adaptation of Nordstraße between Gewerbepark Brand and Eilendorfer Straße in order to prevent a further increase in traffic in the built-up part of Nordstraße between Trierer Straße and Brander Heide/ Gewerbepark Brand.

The conversion of the Nordstraße/ Gewerbepark Brand/ Brander Heide junction is intended in particular to prevent HGV traffic in the built-up part of Nordstraße in order to protect residents from traffic in the industrial estate. In addition, a protective lane for bicycle traffic in the direction of Eilendorfer Straße is to be created in the part of Nordstraße between Gewerbepark Brand and Eilendorfer Straße that is not under construction.

Planning

Nordstraße stretches from Trierer Straße in Aachen-Brand to Freunder Straße in Aachen-Eilendorf and consists of both built-up and unbuilt sections. The measure presented relates to the Nordstraße/ Gewerbepark Brand/ Brander Heide junction and to the section between this junction and the Nordstraße/ Eilendorfer Straße/ Sigsfeldstraße junction that is not subject to construction.

Following the planning decision by the Aachen-Brand district council on 29.04.2020 and the advanced stage of construction and commissioning of the commercial enterprises in the Brand business park, the implementation planning for Nordstraße in the non-attached area and the Nordstraße/ Brand business park/Brander Heide intersection area was drawn up.

The aim of the planning is to structurally prevent trucks from driving from the Brand business park to the right into the adjoining area of Nordstraße.

To this end, the intersection area will be completely redesigned and equipped with 2.50 m wide central islands and crossing points.

The existing drainage ditch has to be adapted to accommodate the eastern crossing point. Pedestrian traffic in the direction of Eilendorfer Straße will be routed via the existing footpath on the northern side of Nordstraße (unbuilt area).

A protective strip 1.50 m wide will be created for cyclists coming from Gewerbepark Brand and will be painted red in accordance with current standards. Cyclists coming from Eilendorfer Straße in the direction of Gewerbepark Brand will still be able to use the northern side road (sidewalk with the addition "cycle traffic free"), which is separated from the carriageway by a grass verge. A ramp dimensioned in accordance with ERA will lead cyclists safely from the ancillary facility to the protective strip in the Brand business park, which will be created as part of the final road expansion of the Brand business park (2nd construction phase).

The protective strip in the part of Nordstraße that is not under construction will be routed via a ramp onto the existing ancillary facility before the junction of Nordstraße and Eilendorfer Straße. In this area, the existing drainage trough will be redesigned and partly reinforced with armourstones on a mortar bed.

A crossing point will be built in front of the junctions with Eilendorfer Straße and Sigsfeldstraße to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Nordstraße in the direction of both Gewerbepark Brand and Debyestraße. The measure has no impact on stationary traffic, as parking spaces for cars and bicycles will neither be removed nor newly created.

In the area of the crossing points at the intersection of Nordstraße/Gewerbepark Brand/Brander Heide, tactile elements made of studded and ribbed panels will be installed to locate the crossing points. On the northern side of the sidewalk, which will be constructed using asphalt, the tactile elements of the crossing point will be glued to the asphalt. At the Nordstraße/ Eilendorfer Straße/ Sigsfeldstraße intersection, the partial expansion of the ancillary facilities will also be made of asphalt and the tactile elements will be glued on. In the transition area from Nordstraße to the Brand business park, bicycle studs (ball paving) will be laid in the northern side area as a separation between the ramp and the paved sidewalk surface.
