Occasion and goal

The carriageway of Metzgerstraße needs to be renewed in the section between Feldstraße and Schlachthof. A measure by Regionetz to renew the supply lines has already taken place in 2023. This takes into account the planting of new tree fields in the street area and others in the area of a parking lot.

Today's situation

Metzgerstraße is located in the Aachen-Mitte district. It is predominantly characterized by commercial uses and has a low traffic load. This section of the road is built according to the separation principle. This means that the traffic area of Metzgerstraße is divided into separate areas for moving traffic and pedestrian traffic. The speed limit is 30 km/h.

In Metzgerstraße, the width of the road space is around 15 m. The sidewalks are approx. 2.90 m wide on both sides. They therefore meet the space requirements for two pedestrians meeting in accordance with RASt 06. On a 9.00 m wide carriageway, parking is now mainly shouldered on the southern side at the edge of the carriageway and on the northern side, although this is not permitted by signage. This restricts the usability of the northern sidewalk for pedestrians. Around 58 parking spaces are available in the section under consideration from Feldstraße. Tree fields are only available at the Feldstraße junction.

Planning

Aachen's municipal services have determined that the roadway needs to be renewed. Illegal shoulder parking is to be prevented in future. The following planning proposal was therefore drawn up.

The parking spaces will be shifted to the roadway. In order to allow cars and trucks to pass between the 2.00 m wide roadside parking lanes in accordance with the guidelines for the construction of urban roads (RASt 06), a usable lane width of 5.55 m should be available. To this end, the northern kerb will be moved approx. 55 cm towards the private land parcels, so that the northern footpath is reduced to a width of 2.40 m and can be used without disruption. The northern edge of the sidewalk is brought forward to the depth of the parking spaces at the junctions in accordance with the necessary trailing curves. This will keep crossing opportunities free. The parking spaces will be marked and the parking strip enhanced with trees. Approx. 43 longitudinal and 7 diagonal parking spaces (in the rear section) as well as 15 bicycle racks between 11 trees are planned. The tree fields are planned in consultation with the Climate and Environment Department and Regionetz with regard to the location of the power lines.

The full extension of the northern sidewalk includes a continuous tactile guidance system for the blind and visually impaired as well as crossing points with split kerb drops.

Planning of parking area
At the end of Metzgerstraße, to the south, there is a municipal area that is used as a parking lot and is also in need of renovation. One half of the area is currently leased with 10 marked parking spaces. The other half is used for unorganized parking. The adjacent access road to the Talbot company is to be reactivated after the parking area has been renovated and used by 10-15 trucks/day (7.5 t). Two access roads to the parking lot are planned for 23 parking spaces (including one disabled parking space), of which around 10 are to be leased, as is the case today. The installation of publicly accessible e-charging stations is also planned. A green strip is also to be created.

Costs

A reliable cost calculation will be prepared once the design planning has been completed. The funds required to implement the measures will be budgeted neutrally in future budget planning.

Next steps

The design planning and then the implementation planning are currently being drawn up. The measure can be implemented from 2025, depending on the outstanding implementation decision.

Political consulting

22.09.2021: Consultation with Aachen-Mitte district council (planning resolution passed)
30.09.2021: Consultation with mobility committee (planning resolution passed)
