Occasion and goal
In Kurfürstenstrasse, extensive renovation work was carried out by Regionetz (gas, water). A district heating pipe was also laid. This involved interfering with the roadway and ancillary facilities. The scope of the Regionetz measure was completed ahead of schedule in May 2024.
The badly damaged road surface of Kurfürstenstraße will then be completely renovated. Kurfürstenstrasse is to be made more attractive through the arrangement of new construction areas and bicycle stands. In addition, guiding elements in the ancillary facilities will increase the accessibility of Kurfürstenstrasse.

Planning
The approx. 220 m long Kurfürstenstraße was originally paved. Over time, the pavement was asphalted over in the roadway area, creating a visual separation between the roadway and parking spaces.
The existing cross-section of approx. 3.00 m sidewalk, 2.00 m parking, 5.00 m carriageway, 2.00 m parking and 3.00 m sidewalk is to be retained during the refurbishment. However, the individual cross-section elements will be modernized to the latest construction standard of the city of Aachen, which will increase the attractiveness of Kurfürstenstraße.
The sidewalks will be uniformly designed throughout with new paving slabs and equipped with tactile guidance elements. The access areas will be raised to sidewalk level and paved in accordance with the new standard.
The parking area will also be newly paved. Two tree beds will line each of the two junctions of Kurfürstenstrasse like gates and a further five tree beds will alternate along the course of the street to help break up and provide shade. A total of 9 new tree beds will be provided for new plantings, and benches will be installed at three of these tree fields for people to linger. There are currently no tree beds in Kurfürstenstraße. The gate-like edging will be used to bring the sidewalks forward at the entrance areas and thus improve visibility of pedestrians crossing the street and create a straight route for the barrier-free guidance elements. New bicycle racks and a new disabled parking space will be built in the parking areas along Kurfürstenstraße. Two electric charging points will also be installed. The roadway will continue to be paved with asphalt. The current asphalt pavement will be removed to create a road structure that meets the latest standards.
Construction times and costs
Politicians approved the conversion in May 2024 at a cost of around one million euros.
