Freunder Landstraße

Brief info
- Project: Redesign
- Goal: Safe and attractive cycle and pedestrian traffic routing
- Project phase: Preliminary planning
Current
In June 2022, a digital information event was held for citizens who did not have the opportunity to visit the information stand on site. At this event, the inventory and the boundary conditions for the redesign were presented and citizens were given the opportunity to discuss them.

Occasion
As part of a traffic feasibility study, Freunder Landstraße is to be redesigned between the junction with Trierer Straße and the village sign. The aim is to clarify the best possible cross-sectional layout of the road and the associated operational regulations.
Today's situation
As the L220, Freunder Landstraße connects the southern Aachen district of Brand and Stolberg. The part of Freunder Landstraße within the OD boundary to be worked on leads from Trierer Straße to the east as far as Freund, before the road bends to the south-east and a little later, after the OD boundary, continues to Stolberg as an open stretch under the responsibility of the NRW state road authority.
The area to be processed is around 1,900 m long. While Freunder Landstraße from the OD boundary towards the city center is initially sparsely built-up and then more loosely built-up, the building density continues to increase towards Trierer Straße. Residential use dominates along the street. However, there are also commercial uses, particularly in the area towards Trierer Strasse.
The traffic load in the most heavily frequented area near Trierer Straße is around 14,000 vehicles/24 h and decreases slightly towards the end of the town. One lane is available for motor vehicle traffic in each direction. The Kolpingstraße, Goertzbrunnstraße and Freund stops are served every half hour in both directions. Line 25 connects Aachen city center with Stolberg. As there is no dedicated cycle traffic facility, cyclists must either use the roadway or the sidewalks, most of which are open to cyclists. However, many of the sidewalks are not wide enough. In some cases, there is also no demarcation between parking areas and footpaths in the side areas, so that there is a mix-up here at the expense of the footpaths.
Goal
The traffic feasibility study is intended to show the various options for taking greater account of cyclists and pedestrians on Freunder Landstraße. To this end, guideline-compliant solutions are to be found that remedy the current shortcomings - especially for cyclists and pedestrians - and create safe and comfortable conditions for all user groups.
In 2019, the "FahrRad in Aachen-Brand" working group of the Aachen-Brand district conference took an in-depth look at the cycling and walking situation on Freunder Landstraße. In November 2019, Aachen City Council adopted the objectives of the Aachen Cycling Decision. These approaches should be taken into account when drawing up planning proposals.
Objectives of the traffic feasibility study:
- Proposals for safe and attractive cycling and walking routes
- Discussion of cross-section alternatives in line with the directive; demonstration of the consequences of taking into account the dimensions of the Aachen wheel decision
- Create the basis for further steps in public (e.g. citizens' workshops) or in politics or with regard to further planning steps
Costs
As soon as the first reliable variant proposals are available in the site plan, these will be provided with an initial cost estimate. The costs will then be calculated in more detail as the planning process progresses.
Next steps/political consultation
In an inter-party motion, the politicians in Brand have asked the administration to carry out a public participation process at a very early planning stage. Following the public participation, the political bodies (Aachen-Brand district council and mobility committee) will be informed about the results of the participation and further planning.
