Digitalization in mobility

With digital solutions and innovative ideas, we want to make mobility in Aachen smarter and more environmentally friendly - for a future worth living in our city.

The digital transformation is changing the way we get around in Aachen. With the targeted use of innovative technologies, we want to create modern, connected and sustainable mobility that meets the needs of Aachen's citizens. In the following, we would like to introduce you to some of the key fields of action in the area of digitality and innovations in mobility that we are working on - areas that are already shaping our city today and will continue to develop in the future.

Fields of action

These digital innovations and technologies are the basis for future-proof and sustainable mobility in our city. By using traffic data, data analysis, digital twins and V2X technology, we are working to create a smarter, more efficient and more liveable city for everyone. Together, we are shaping the mobility of tomorrow - digital, connected and environmentally friendly.

  • Networked vehicles

The future of mobility is connected - and it is already starting now. Connected vehicles that communicate with each other and with the infrastructure (Vehicle-to-Everything, V2X) offer completely new possibilities in terms of safety and efficiency in road traffic. These technologies make it possible to control traffic more intelligently, avoid accidents and sustainably optimize mobility in the city. Together with ASEAG, for example, we have already launched a pilot project to give priority to buses using V2X on Vaalser Straße.

  • Intelligent transportation systems and digital twins

With the introduction of digital (technical) twins for our city, we want to better understand and analyze traffic flow in real time in the future, for example. These virtual models will help us to observe traffic patterns and plan future developments in a targeted manner. With the help of traffic data and artificial intelligence, the infrastructure should be used more efficiently and contribute to shorter journey times.

    More

  • Data analysis and real-time traffic data

Analyzing traffic data is a key component of our digital mobility strategy. By collecting and evaluating (real-time) data - for example from sensors or traffic monitoring systems - we gain valuable insights into the flow of traffic, the utilization of public parking spaces or charging stations and the use of sharing services. This data helps us to make informed decisions and continuously improve mobility in our city.

  • Sustainability and smart mobility solutions

Digitalization and innovation not only offer new opportunities for transport, but also for the protection of our environment. By efficiently managing traffic flows and improving the mobility infrastructure, we are promoting resource-conserving and environmentally friendly mobility. In this way, we are increasing the quality of life in Aachen while at the same time reducing our city's ecological footprint.

  • Use of new technologies

New technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G are changing the mobility industry and improving the way we get around Aachen. AI helps to analyze traffic flows in real time and avoid traffic jams, while IoT enables the networking of vehicles and infrastructures to create seamless mobility. 5G ensures fast communication between these systems, which significantly increases efficiency and flexibility in traffic.

Tools and services

Our digital tools and services such as the mobility dashboard and the Stadtnavi route planner offer Aachen residents direct access to important traffic information and help to make everyday life easier and more environmentally friendly.

Research and funding projects

We are actively involved in numerous practice-oriented funding and research projects, which are primarily concerned with developing and testing solutions that are actually implemented in the everyday lives of Aachen residents and also allow the administration to work more efficiently. We work closely with partners from research, business and administration to shape new ideas and technologies in such a way that they can be put into practice quickly and efficiently. Our aim is not only to research innovative concepts, but also to implement them in such a way that they directly benefit the citizens of Aachen - be it through better transport services, smart technologies or sustainable mobility solutions that make everyday life easier.

  • Com.IT

The "KomIT" project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), aims to bring together municipal data such as supply lines, roads and street furniture in a central platform. This enables all parties involved to have up-to-date and reliable access to the necessary information, which makes the planning and implementation of construction projects more efficient. By networking this data, a digital twin is created "on, under and above the road", which increases transparency and accelerates construction projects.

  • COMPACT

As part of the "KOMPAKT" (Coordinated Management of Parking Spaces in Cities) project funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), we are investigating how digitalization can help to make the use of parking spaces in urban areas more efficient.

  • BUS2DATA

The "BUS2DATA" project funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) aims to optimize local public transport by using V2X technology. To this end, a new type of bus acceleration is being tested on Vaalser Straße in Aachen and a comprehensive database is being collected for operation.

  • AC_DATEP

The "Aachen Data Pool for Technical Development and Planning" (Ac-DatEP) project contributes to improving mobility and urban planning. By collecting high-resolution measurement data on traffic flows and other aspects of mobility, the aim is to develop targeted solutions that meet the needs of city residents and tourists. The information obtained will help to better organize the flow of traffic and make mobility more efficient.

    More

  • ACUP

Public street space is limited, so it is important to use it as efficiently as possible - this includes parking space. In order to find solutions for better use of parking space, it is necessary to know exactly how much parking space is available and how it is used. As part of the project "Analysis of the characteristics of urban parking" (ACUP), data on the supply and use of parking space was collected in the city of Aachen. Existing information was updated, supplemented and digitized. In addition, the use of parking space in two selected districts was recorded in real time using optical sensors.

  • VISTA

As part of the VISTA project ("Standardization of the database by creating a digital image of the infrastructure") funded by the Ministry of Transport in NRW, a 3D image inspection was carried out to capture high-resolution images and derive a digital twin of the traffic infrastructure in the city of Aachen. On this basis, detailed data on traffic signs, road damage, markings and real surfaces were derived using AI.
