Sharing offers

The English word "sharing" refers to the shared use of a resource, such as a
bike, e-scooter or car. The term multimodality describes switching to different means of transportation to reach a destination. The proportion of multimodal users in Aachen is growing steadily and sharing services are in high demand. The city of Aachen wants to promote this positive development.

Car sharing

Definition: Mobile at any time - without your own car!

Car sharing is a system that offers the opportunity to use locally available vehicles at any time for any length of time. Car sharing is an environmentally friendly and inexpensive alternative to owning a car, especially for those who only need a car occasionally or want to consciously do without their own car. True to the motto "book - get in - drive", you can access Cambio vehicles easily and without complications. How it works: You reserve a car of your choice online via the Cambio app or via movA, pick it up at the specified car sharing station, drive as long and as far as you want and return it to the pick-up station. Billing is based on the time booked and kilometers driven.

Car sharing concept

The City of Aachen supports the use of car sharing as a contribution to sustainable mobility. Car sharing is an important component of the sharing guidelines. Stationary car sharing also offers considerable added value in terms of urban development and traffic due to the proven savings in car use. This type of car sharing should continue to be pursued as a priority in Aachen. In Aachen, car sharing has so far been characterized by the largest operator, Cambio, which has been active since 1990. It currently provides its approx. 232 car sharing vehicles at 73 stations.

Car sharing models in use

With station-based car sharing, the vehicles are rented and returned at a fixed station. Reservations can be made several weeks in advance, which means that vehicle availability is highly predictable. It is also possible to make spontaneous bookings for vehicles that have not been reserved in advance, which are then immediately available.

Car sharing citizen participation

Station-based car sharing has proven to be an effective instrument for reducing the number of cars on the road and thus makes a significant contribution to relieving traffic congestion. For this reason, station-based car sharing will continue to be promoted as a priority in Aachen.

E-scooter

Several providers of e-scooter rental systems have been active in the city of Aachen since October 2019. The basis for renting out these rental vehicles has so far been the signing of the municipal quality agreement between the city of Aachen and the providers. There are currently four providers with 2,000 vehicles in public spaces in the city of Aachen, each with 500 vehicles: VOI (October 4, 2019), TIER/DOTT (since February 1, 2020 and since October 2024 under the DOTT brand), RideMovi (since April 30, 2024) and Ryde (since March 2026).

E-scooters, often also called e-scooters, offer a good solution for covering the first and last mile. They have been officially permitted on public roads since 2019. The offer is intended to provide a high-quality response to the mobility needs of the population in Aachen as well as visitors to the city. A mixture of free-floating and fixed parking zones is to be implemented.

Electric scooters are a popular addition to the transportation system, especially when they help reduce car trips and ease traffic congestion. Users may park electric scooters just as they would bicycles. However, it is important that they do not block walkways or damage green spaces. To further regulate the parking of e-scooters, special parking zones are being established in the city center and in the city districts. Additional parking zones are planned for locations where e-scooters are particularly often parked in a disruptive manner, such as in front of train stations, hospitals, or universities.

Note & rules on e-treadle controllers

  • It's so easy to rent an e-scooter

    1. Download the app and register.
    2. Open the app to find a free e-scooter near you. Scan the QR code on the handlebar to unlock it.
    3. Drive off and please follow the traffic rules.
    4. Park the e-scooter at a permitted location and complete the ride in the app.
  • Who can borrow the e-scooters?

The e-scooters may be rented by persons aged 18 and over. A valid driver's license is not required. Private e-scooters may be ridden from the age of 14.

  • Where can I ride the e-scooter?

You may ride on cycle paths, cycle lanes and in cycle lanes. If these are not available, you can ride on the road. Riding on sidewalks and in pedestrian zones is not permitted.

  • What do I have to bear in mind when returning or parking the vehicle?

Park the e-scooter in a permitted place so that it does not obstruct anyone. Avoid driveways, guidance systems for the blind, bus stops or private properties. If available, park the e-scooter in the designated parking area. You can also find these in the app.

  • Can I take other people with me on the e-scooter?

No, persons and objects may not be carried on the e-scooter.

  • What are the rules for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs?

The same blood alcohol limits apply to driving an e-scooter as for car drivers. This means:
    - 0.5 per mille: above this level, you may be subject to fines, points in Flensburg and driving bans
    - Drug use: driving under the influence of drugs is strictly prohibited and can lead to severe penalties.

  • What fines can be imposed?

Like all other road users, e-scooters are subject to the German Road Traffic Act (StVO). In the course of their registration, the Federal Office's uniform list of offenses was supplemented to include the use of small electric vehicles, and a violation counts as a traffic offense.

  • Where do I report an incorrectly parked e-scooter?

If you see an e-scooter that is a hindrance and/or a hazard, you can report it directly via the provider's app or via the City of Aachen's defect report.
