March 2024: Births in Aachen

How many Sunday children - who are said to be particularly happy and full of zest for life - are there in Aachen? If you look at the period from 2010 to 2023, 30,629 Aacheners were born, an average of 2,188 children per year. So much for the general figures.

It gets interesting when you take a closer look at the birthdays. The day with the most births during this period was May 30, 2018 with 20 births - a Wednesday. There were no days without births in the entire 13 years. However, only one child was born on 91 days. 15 leap year babies were born on February 29. Slightly more births were registered at the turn of the year: 73 children were born on December 31 and 62 on January 1 between 2010 and 2023. There were also 61 "Christmas babies" during this period, i.e. children born on Christmas Eve.

  • Births by day of the week

A look at the individual days of the week also reveals an uneven distribution. Generally speaking, more births take place during the week than at the weekend. On average, 355 children are born on a Friday each year. On average, there are 270 births on Saturday and 262 on Sunday. In Aachen, therefore, there are significantly more Friday babies than proverbial Sunday babies.

February 2024: Aachen is growing!

Aachen is growing: since 2010, with the exception of 2021, more people have moved in than out every year. In 2023, this surplus amounted to 1,025 people. Between 2010 and 2023, a total of 284,556 people moved to Aachen, while 265,395 people moved away from Aachen. Overall, the city has grown by 19,161 people since 2010 as a result of this balance. An important factor here is students moving into or out of accommodation in Aachen.

  • Net migration by month

A look at the migration balances for the individual months reveals interesting seasonal effects. In the period under review, the average values for net migration per month are only positive for the months of September, October and November. The highest average value was recorded in October with an average immigration surplus of 1,287 people. The average surplus of immigration in these months is sufficient to turn the annual total into positive territory. With an average deficit of 240 people, the month of July has the largest surplus of out-migration.

The "Balance" chart below clearly shows that the start of the winter semester significantly increases the number of people moving to Aachen. It can also be seen that since 2018, the start of the summer semester has correlated with more people moving in. The increased influx of refugees from Ukraine in the months of March to July 2022 is also evident. Basically, it can be said that the influx of students has a recognizable influence on the population growth of the city of Aachen.
